The major rivers like the Nile and lakes such as Victoria might end up drying altogether. The collateral environmental impact will be felt beyond their geographical borders into other parts of the world. In my opinion, what this part of the world needs is an engineering adjustment program that will oversee the transfer from the use of wood and charcoal into alternative sources of energy that can be derived from the rich natural resources.

These resources are wind, water, and solar. There have been efforts, in several quarters of the third world to improvise forms of energy-saving stoves that can minimize the dependency on wood and charcoal. These projects have mainly focused on the making of special stoves that use less wood energy. However, these stoves have not gained much favour among the populations because of a variety of factors. First of all, the lack of engineering expertise in their operational systems has exposed them to various technical flaws that make them both inefficient, and costly in terms of maintenance.

Secondly, the energy costs of running these special stoves are only marginally different from the traditional use of energy, and this lessens the impact mitigation on the energy crisis that they are supposed to address. The creative use of naturally endowed resources can help the third world overcome the energy crisis. I wish to design a special kind of stove that uses both solar energy, water, and wind in different ports. This three-pronged design is deliberately made so in consideration of the varying potentialities of the different parts of the third world.

The working of this special stove is also crafted in a way that can adapt to different climatic conditions of the third world. The all-weather factor is meant to help it adapt to the appropriate form of energy at the appropriate time. These designs are at provisional stages and need advanced engineering refinement to make the most appropriate for the purpose of fuel economy. Their designs are revolutionary in aspect as they are specially designed to avoid the loopholes that previous attempts have had.

At the Cornell University College of Engineering, I hope to find the best technical and theoretical skills that will fine-tune the workability of this project. I also look forward to peer reviews of the design and professional guidance for this and other projects that will most certainly come along.
