Career Exploration assessment instrument helps the individual to know what are his/her career options, the preparation needed and how can he/she adjust to the job. Usually, this are being used by newly-graduate individuals for the transition that they need from their University life to their professional life. This kind of assessment instrument helps individuals to know their interest in a certain field of work that would somehow help them attain their full potential as a professional. It helps the individual to know themselves better and to know the job that fits their skills and personality.

On the other hand, Pre-employment Assessment gives the company an idea or a glimpse on the nature of the person that they are about to hire. All if not majority of companies are using pre-employment assessment to prevent hiring mistakes and losing their money down the drain. In a survey of recent college graduates, 95% said they would be willing to make a false statement in their résumés in order to get a job. Forty-one percent admitted they had already done so, according to a report in Nations Business (Profiles International, 2010).

Now let us compare and contrast the two forms of assessment. Both gives a glimpse on the personal and professional performance of a certain individual. It shows the individual’s strength and weaknesses. The difference of career exploration assessment from the Pre-employment assessment is the purpose of the assessment. The purpose of the career exploration assessment is to give the individual a glimpse on what kind of career would suit his or her personality and skills. It was taken by the individual himself/herself through self-efficacy – usually for his/her own professional growth and career choice.

While the Pre-employment was given by the company to the individual who wants to be a part of that profession. The purpose of this assessment is to let the company have a glimpse whether the individual that they are about to hire has the skills, personality, and attitude needed for the job.Two issues that may be encountered in using a career exploration assessment are: it’s fairness in a multi-cultural setting and it’s validity and reliability. First, is it’s fair when we look in the light of a multi-cultural setting?

What is the assurance that the questionairres that is being used gathered the same kind of data no matter what the culture of a certain test taker is? Would the result be true across culture? Secondly, is it’s validity and reliability. There are times when the test taker might answer a certain question due external influences on what he/she wants to become or what kind of work does he/she wants to do and not because that is really his/her skills or personality. I don’t think that this assessment instrument has the ability to determine this kind of facet that needs to be addressed.

Issues that might be present in using the pre-employment assessment instruments are the following: fairness in multi-culturalism, validity and reliability. How sure are we that the result of this assessment instrument is fair and not biased? We know that in a certain workplace, there is a great possibility that people with different cultural background might be present. Is the culture and language differences were also taken into consideration in this instrument? A good assessment instrument should address those issues in order for it to reliable and useful.

In the event that these issues might not be addressed and handled properly, there is a great possibility that it would have an adverse impact not just to the individual but also to the company as a whole. Let us take the analogy of a doctor misdiagnosing his patient. He would give the wrong kind of medicine that might not cure the ailment of the patient and worse, might have the unwanted side-effects of the medication. If not done properly, assessing oneself or assessing a potential employee might have detrimental effects to the individual and to the company as a whole.

One of the most important information that I learned from my peer about the assessment that he chose is that each one of us needs to constantly assess our self-development. It would give us an idea whether we are improving as a person or not. There is a great value in using these assessments in my own job. It serves as a self-monitoring scheme that would eventually help me to develop self-efficacy that is imperative in reaching my full potential as an individual and as a professional.
