The author has been known for his books about his continent than for his books about Mark Twain. One of his most read books about Mark Twain includes ‘The Complete Short Stories of Mark Twain’. He has written several other books of Mark Twain’s writing as well which include: ‘The Complete Humorous Sketches and Tales of Mark Twain (1961), Mark Twain: Life As I Find It: Essays, Sketches, Tales and Other Material (1961), Complete Essays of Mark Twain (1963), The Travels of Mark Twain (1961), The Complete Novels of Mark Twain (1964), The Complete Travel Books of Mark Twain (2 volumes, 1966), The Comic Mark Twain Reader (1977), The Selected Letters of Mark Twain (1982), Plymouth Rock and the Pilgrims and Other Salutary Platform Opinions (1984), Mark Twain at His Best: A Comprehensive Sampler (1986) and The Outrageous Mark Twain (1987)’ (Elmira, 2001).
The Autobiography of Mark Twain is a flavor of the man - the legend, a great father, friend, husband, brother and son. The book has been written by Charles Neider and the author has brought out several different aspects of the Mark Twain which have never been known by the world. Mark Twain has been recognized by all as a brilliant author however there were several other roles that he has played over the years and has touched the lives of many. According to Walt Whitman, Mark Twain is one of the most quintessential writers that the country has ever produced.
The book provides an insight into the life of the man even though it does not provide a complete autobiography. Charles Neider introduces the book as, ‘Mark Twains autobiography is a classic of American letters to be ranked with the autobiographies of Ben Franklin and Henry James. It has the marks of greatness in it—style, scope, imagination, laughter, tragedy’ (Lombardi, 2010).
