The tobacco companies created an empire in the 20th century with the sale of cigarettes which contain the addictive substance nicotine along with thousands of other toxic quemicals. It would be a wise decision for any smoker to quit smoking immediately, but it is as simple as a non-smoker thinks. Cigarettes are considered the most addictive drug in the world and smokers can obtain this drug legally anywhere. Smokers become addictive on a physical and psychological level. It is extremely hard to quit smoking.

Every year 35 million Americans attempt to quit smoking with only 10% of them being successful in the short term (Pascual). The purpose of this paper is to discuss ways to quit smoking. Smoking is a very unhealthy that can lead to lung cancer and other health problems. According to the American Lung Association every year over 460,000 American citizens die from cigarette smoking (Lungusa). The faster a person decides the quit greater the chance the individual has to increase his / her lifespan.

Quitting smoking is very difficult. One of the first things a person that makes the decision to quit should do is to look for a support group of friends and family to help them along the process. There are actual withdraw symptoms associated with getting of cigarettes. Some of these symptoms include: anxiety, nervousness, depression, sleeping disorders, attention deficit, hunger, and inability to concentrate among others. I have a cousin that has quit 3 times and he has always come back to the cigarette.

He provided with a real life example of the reality that quitting smoking is extremely difficult. There are ways to quit smoking. Four products available in the marketplace to help a smoker get of the cigarettes are pills, nicotine patches, nicotine gum and electronic cigarettes. Two of the most commonly used pills to quit smoking are Zyban and Chantix. These must be prescribed by a doctor. A person attempting to quit smoking along with a support group should seek the assistance and advice of medical professional to help the person along in the process.

Nicotine patches and pills are available over the counter and represent a cheap substitute that can help the person along in the process because it is proving the active ingredient in the cigarette, nicotine, which makes people so addicted. Electronic cigarettes are the newest method to quit smoking. The product has become very popular in Europe and most manufacturers of this alternative solution are Chinese based companies. The electronic cigarette is basically a nicotine inhaler that looks like a cigarette.

Along with the nicotine it provides smoker with a good simulation of the motor movement of placing a cigarette in their mouth. Quitting smoking is not an easy task. The withdrawals symptoms associated with getting off the cigarette are an undesirable event that smokers do not want to go through. Also the fact that they are legal gives smokers the illusion that the product is socially acceptable. Since there are so many smokers around a person trying to quit when performing normal tasks within our society is highly probable that they will see a smoker enjoying a cigarette everywhere they go to.

Seeing other people smoking when a person is trying to quit can lead to setbacks in the rehabilitation process. In order to quit smoking a person really has to commit to it and accept the fact that it may take some time to finally achieve the goal. If the first time a person is not able to quit, the person can not get discourage and must try again.
