The history of advertising is believed to have begun in the form of classified advertising in newspapers. Descriptions and prices of products were given in simplest manner. Gradually, illustrations were introduced in advertising. The most successful illustrated in the earliest period is that of ‘Pears’ soap. Thomas Barratt was the person behind the innovation and for the same reason, he later on came to be called ‘The Father of Modern Advertising.’ With the popularization of AM broadcast radio, the industry of advertising too flourished.

The invention TV and the internet, made advertising still easier and more effective. Most of the advertisements nowadays make use of music. Advertisers are ready to spend any amount of money to produce effective advertisements because of the competition between every product in the market. It can be seen from Stewart’s and Furse’s finding in 1986 that, out of 1000 television commercials around 42% made use of music in them. An analysis done in 1993 by Appelbaum and Halliburton showed a rise in it with the percentage of advertisements making use of music being 89%.

Zenithoptimedia found in 2008 that the global advertising expenditure on major media including newspapers, magazines, television, radio, cinema, outdoor and the internet, grew from US$ 385,324 to 476,276 million. This paper is a dissertation of people’s perception of music in advertisement. The paper will be laid out as follows. The introduction will be followed by the research question. A literature review followed by methodology will be given next. The methodology will include both a survey as well as interviews.

This will be analyzed and discussed in the next section titled research and findings. The final section will be the conclusion. The research question for this paper is given below.
