Comparison of USA and England USA is located in North America between Canada and Mexico while England is located in Western Europe between the North Atlantic Ocean and the North Sea, northwest of France. The area of the USA is around 9,826,630 sq km while that of England is 130410 sq km. (England - MSN Encarta, Retrieved on 6/11/2008 http://encarta.msn.com/encyclopedia_761572205/england.html) Though both in England and USA, the official language is English, the accent, written style, and style of expression are different.
British English is better uniformly arranged compared to American English. But both forms of these English (British and American) are accepted as the base for the international world. “There are tremendous cultural differences between the US and the UK, despite having many similarities. People talk differently, and not just in the accent or the words, but in the general tone and meaning. They have different ways of making friends, finding jobs, interacting at the office” (Cultural differences between the US and the UK - Retrieved on 6/11/2008 from http://britishexpats.
com/wiki/Cultural_differences_between_the_US_and_England) The Americans are generally very friendly in nature having no hesitation in speaking to even strangers through the friendship may not be deep. But they are not interested in time-wasting meaningless conversations. But the England people normally will not interact that much freely like the Americans. They will keep a suspected eye always while dealing with strangers. They are always busy or pretend to be like that. Family life is considered much important in American society compared to the society in England.
The traveling nature of the British people is more compared to the Americans. The majority of the Americans don’t even see any other countries while the majority of the English people have been to some foreign country at some stage of their life. Racism is more in America compared to England. But now it has changed substantially as seen in the recently concluded American presidential elections. The Americans are most proud of their ancestry compared to the British people. The sportsman spirit is more in the Americans than in the British people as seen in the football fans.
“American society is more self cantered, combative and for want of better words “egotistical”. An American will come in and say I know you should do it this way and fall flat on their face if they get it wrong. The English would rather show appropriate “respect” to other peoples positions as it is likely that someone else will know best (even if their position is good)” (What are the cultural differences between England and America Retrieved on 6/11/2008 (http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?
qid=20070731150117AA7ymuv) The American people are more egocentric. They will not accept their mistakes. For them what they did is correct and they will not recognize anybody’s criticism just like we have seen in the Iraq war. On the other hand, the British people are a more understanding type. They are ready to say sorry if somebody convinced them that they made a mistake. They are more professional in their approaches and attitudes. The earlier histories were shown that the British were eager to spread their wings wherever possible.
Most of the commonwealth countries are once ruled by the British. But now they are not that much interested in such things due to maybe their social and economical reasons. On the other hand, the Americans are most interested in extending their hand to anywhere possible due to their supremacy in power and resources. Wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are the best examples. But due to the serious financial crisis and the change in foreign policies of the newly elected president one can expect a more peaceful world without any hindrance from the Americans.
