THE KEY TO ROOM MANAGEMENT Learning outcomes depend upon a number of variables. A number of studies have shown that of variables, room management had the most significant impact on student achievement. Classroom management, in turn, is the dynamic interplay of the teacher - student relationship. Studies have shown that where such interaction is positive, results have also been better. This paper by R.J. Marazao and J.S. Marazano, focuses on the two key players in classroom management - the teacher and the student - to present how teachers can establish an environment that is conducive to learning.
The Teacher
The article posits that contrary to popular belief, effective teacher-student relationship has less to do with a teacher's personality and more to do with specific teacher behavior that includes dominance, cooperation and an awareness of high-need students.
Appropriate Levels of Dominance. Dominance is not a negative characteristic, but implies a teacher's ability to, "provide clear purpose and strong guidance". In fact most students, when surveyed preferred such teachers over more permissive ones.
Cooperation. Teachers and students need to work together as one team. Allowing students to set their own goals and asking for their suggestions creates a sense of involvement and sends the message that the teacher, "cares about and tries to accommodate students' interests". Although in a position of authority, the teacher must remain approachable to students both within and outside the classroom.
Awareness of High-need Students. Studies have shown that as many as 12 to 22 percent of students suffer from some sort of mental or emotional strain. The average teacher is neither equipped nor trained to deal with such students, who can be a disruptive influence. An awareness of this fact, coupled with a few simple techniques can go a long way in maintaining effective classroom management.
The Student
The paper identifies the various types of high needs students, their characteristics, and the strategies that can be employed by teachers to create an environment in which all types of students feel secure. Simple techniques like providing immediate rewards and consequences can go a long way in setting the tone of the classroom. The categories of high needs students identified by the authors are:
Passive - those who fear failure as well as those who fear relationships.
Aggressive - includes hostile, oppositional, and covert.
Student with Attention Problems - hyperactive and inattentive.
Perfectionist.
Socially Inept.
How teachers and students interact is the key to effective classroom management. An understanding of the various facets of this association assists in establishing a good student teacher relationship, which is imperative for high student achievement. Instead of leaving things to chance, teachers need to implement techniques that have been tried and tested in order to achieve effective classroom management.
Comment
The paper by Marzano and Marzano is a well-researched article that draws attention to the two most critical aspects of classroom management. Focusing on these two key components, it provides valuable insights into the role of the teacher in first, laying down and then implementing policies that aid in establishing a learning environment. Further, the assessment of different high needs students and simple methods to integrate them into the class is indeed very helpful.
Classroom Application
Most teachers have one or more type of high need students in their classroom, sometimes without even being aware of the. A categorization of possible high need students and simple methods to deal with them is certainly very handy. Most teachers probably do many of these things instinctively, but having the same presented in a simple understandable manner is a boon. Where the teacher is already implementing some of the recommendations it reinforces her belief and self-confidence. In other cases, it focuses the attention of teachers on possible 'blind-spots' both in the teacher herself, and in her interaction with her students. Addressing these 'blind-spots' will only lead to an overall improvement in classroom environment as well as students' results.
