Why I want to become a Physician Why I want to become a Physician Titus Rock Manickam Order No. 200365 07 January 2008Why I want to become a PhysicianA career in the medical line fascinates me because it provides the healing touch and hope to those suffering illness and pain. It is a noble profession and boon to society which has increasing need of doctors, nurses and paramedics to alleviate sickness and hopelessness brought about by natural as well as man-made causes. Since childhood, the idea of becoming a physician has been doing the rounds in my mind.
At first I did feel good about the idea but I was also aware at the same time the high level of concentration and dedication required in the field, academically as well as professionally. Several visits to hospitals and other places where the sick received treatment proved beyond doubt that the education and training the men and women who ran medical institutions received, had to be of the highest, rigorous standard. Over the years, my interest and aptitude to choose medicine as a career increased.
There were times when I used to feel a bit scared at the prospect of operating on patients. But looking at the advances in technology and the great strides made in the way complex and difficult cases are handled, I am encouraged to do whatever necessary to become a physician. The immediate reason for my desire to become a physician is my grandmother who had suffered a broken hip which required hip replacement surgery, a fractured shoulder which restricted her mobility, and moreover, she is a diabetic patient.
Observing her condition and the way the doctors attending her helped to ease her discomfort further strengthened my resolve to take up medicine as a profession. I have the highest regard and opinion of the doctors who treat my grandmother. Their treatment, dedication and care are wonderful examples for youngsters to give their best for those who need the healing touch, professionally and personally. One of my best role model in the field is Florence Nightingale. Nonetheless, I am aware not every doctor in the world has the same level of professionalism and dedication.
Others who have helped shape my objectives and goals are my parents who are ever supportive about my academics and career, my teachers and counselors, and a great number of people who I have seen do wonders in the realm of healing and cure. I spend a great deal of time studying medical journals and watching informative channels like Discovery and National Geographic and some of their presentations have been awesome. I am aware the field of medicine is vast and there are many branches one could opt for.
Naturally, my preference is orthopedics. I want to do something that would bring about total recovery for my grandmother. Having experienced on first hand basis the difficulties and frustrations encountered by an orthopedic patient, I want to devote my knowledge and expertise to discover and invent medicines and technologies that would help patients live cheerful, normal lives. The need for healing and cure is not specific to one particular region. It is a global need. In some places like Africa and Asia, the need and challenge are enormous.
One of my aims is to visit these places and get a first hand view of the situation so that I get a better idea of improving conditions and augmenting facilities. In the wonderful field of science and medicine, there is a great legacy of inspiring leaders who have left their footprints in the sands of time by astounding discoveries and inventions that have made man's life happier and more comfortable. I certainly wish to emulate them. Source:1. Q&A with COMP Student - WesternU Communique - Western University of Health Sciences, www.westernu.edu/xp/communique/6/art3.xml. 2.
