The Respectability of Physician 1 Investigating the Influence of Religion and Sexual Orientation on The Respectability of Physician The Respectability of Physician 2 Abstract: A physician’s life does not stop with diagnosis; it interacts with the external influences from the social circle such as religion, sexual orientation, culture etc. The aim of the dissertation is to have a deep investigation over the influences of religion and sexual orientation on the respectability of a physician. The important aspect from which the given topic will be discussed is the patient-physician relationship, and the responsibilities of a physician in the society. The influence of these social factors determines the respectability of a physician. The dissertation will concentrate on a detailed study of the effect of the concepts of sexual orientation and religious beliefs on the position which a physician holds in the society. It also discusses on how a patient would react to a physician, if he is found to be unfit to follow the moral standards and as a result how the respectability of the physician gets disturbed is also focused at. This study will bring a new way of looking at the expected way of patient-physician relationship. Dr. John Smith’s medical survey with the influence of religion and sexual orientation is taken as the resort to apply and experiment with the theme of the study. Introduction: Society is a place of mixed community, where the role of physician is undoubtedly very important. A physician is considered as an unavoidable strength of a society, he evaluates the health issues and health outcomes of his fellow human beings. He plays the role of treating the sicks, so his part in the society is considered as manipulating some of health needs of the society. The Respectability of Physician 3 While analysing the society, it is composed of various factors such as religion, customs, traditions, moral standards, food, economy etc. How does the role of a physician fits into the influential category should be reviewed, and upon which the reaction of the public towards the physicians should be calculated so that the respectability of a physician in a society could be guessed. Every society has its own religious beliefs and values, almost all the people do live with their own religious beliefs, now the argument is that how does the physician exercise the religious influences in his practise and how does it gets reflected in his practise. Before going through the diagnosis a physician’s duty would be to scrutinize the social factors behind the health issue. So a physician should be aware of the social context under which the patient survives or suffers, he should not at the same time apply a self bound approach to the treatment. There should not be place for religious discrimination in the process of treatment, as this would affect the respectability of a physician. Apart from this he should be a promise keeping person and work in such a way to compete with the innovative methods, all in favour of the society. Coming to sexual orientation, it is defined as the individual’s direction towards sexuality or the individual’s reaction towards sexuality. To be more precise it describes the way in which every person treating sexuality from his own point of view, a male or female in a society might have either a heterosexual or homosexual or bisexual attitude towards sexuality. These concepts of sexual orientation do affect a physician’s respectability, if he or she turns towards reverse perspectives on sexual orientation. In the sense the physician’s behaviour with the patient determines his respectability. The Respectability of Physician 4 The theory is based on how religion and sexual orientation in the medical practices of a physician affects his respectability. He is responsible for promoting public health and this is of an effective practical importance. Dr. John Smith’s highly qualified credentials is meted out with the variables in religion and sexual orientation. And the other side of the hypothesis will be focused on how do the patient’s feel while under his treatment, whether they would recommend him or do not want to recommend him. Method Section: This is going to be a quantitative analysis, and the paper concentrates on the behavioural reaction of the patient-physician relationship. The dissertation includes the following steps in two phases. In phase 1 the following steps are included collection of data and analyses of the data. The data includes: 1. Observation of Dr. Smith’s highly qualified credentials [i] Verification of his qualification, [ii]. Meritorious ness in the medical field should also be considered. 2. Observation of Dr. Smith’s M.D, from his qualification point of view. In the sense his qualification and testimonials should be verified in terms of his practises and his behaviour with the patients. [i] his practises done so far should be collected, [ii]. The number of patients he has attended, [iii]. The type of diseases he had diagnosed and given treatment for should also be considered. 3. Clinical analyses: observation of Dr.Smith’s Clinical outcomes. The Respectability of Physician 5 [i] his clinical methods should be reviewed. [ii] his suggestions given should also be taken into account. 4. Survey on Dr.Smith’s views on religion and religious beliefs [i] his participation in religious activities if any, [ii] his evaluation on religion and religious values expressed among his co-professionals or patients or reports should be taken into account for further study. 5. Survey on Dr.Smith’s views on sexual orientation. [i]. How he considers sexuality [ii] Had he been homosexual or heterosexual or neutral towards sexuality while dealing with his patients also should be taken for research consideration? This could be achieved by talking with some of the patients or co-workers who had worked with him. 6. Finally his career should be reviewed so as to get a complete study of his personality. This could be done by going through his previous services and reputations. This data will help to identify the inner personality of Dr. Smith. The variable in his profession includes religion and sexual orientation should be analysed and prepared for review which will be in turn read by many patients. So that the conclusion could be received in terms of whether they would recommend him or do not recommend him. This will constitute the first phase, the second phase of the method section will include questionnaire section, the questions will be posed over many such patients by explaining The Respectability of Physician 6 to them the service history and the life of Dr. Smith from the data collected in the first phase of the study. Method Section for Second Phase: This includes questionnaire section, collection of data from the responses given by the readers. The readers are the deciding authority of the conclusion, based upon the majority of response the conclusion will be taken out for further consideration and evaluated with the previous data collected. The questionnaire includes the following: 1. What do you understand by the theme mentioned in the data? 2. Do you agree with the fact that religion plays a prominent role in the society? 3. Do you think physicians should also consider the religious beliefs of the patients? 4. What is your idea about sexual orientation? 5. Do you think that physicians need to be aloof form this orientation? 6. Do you agree with Dr. Smith’s views on sexual orientation? 7. Do you accept Dr. Smith as a good and respectable physician? 8. Do you want to recommend Dr. Smith or not? 9. After going through the survey what would you feel about the respectability of Dr. Smith? Conclusion: The conclusion as mentioned above could be drawn based on the personal survey conducted and the opinion of the readers. The problems are that this might be controversial themes over the profession of physicians as; physicians generally looked upon as superior human beings with more passion for humanity and service.
