Letter of Intent International Studies 2007 Studying design in New York has given me two wonderful opportunities. It has given me access to some of the finest creative centers in the world, and generated an obsession to incorporate nature into our living spaces. Faced with an endless expanse of steel and concrete, I have found it necessary to bring nature indoors. By giving it the protection of our shared living areas, it offers us the serenity we require to maintain contact with our souls. Jean Giraudoux once said, "The flower is the poetry of the eternal seductiveness of life".

Well, I have been eternally rapt by nature and that is why admission to the 2007 International Studies program in Japan is vital to my career as a designer. As an avid practitioner of Zen, I have developed an appreciation for the influence that philosophy has on design. I find that the Eastern culture is the path into my future as I begin to incorporate green eco-design into our interior spaces. Japan is at the forefront of this discipline as they meld bamboo, rocks, and water into a harmonious living area.

This offers more than just a chance encounter with nature. It makes the beholder an active participant with their surroundings and offers them the serenity of peace of mind. This seductiveness of the natural is also echoed in Japan's world-renowned gardens. My studies in Japan would give me the opportunity to view these landmarks and create new ways to bring the garden indoors. My interest in Feng Shui would naturally compliment the concept of space as a living environment. The blend of nature, Japanese gardens, and Feng Shui would offer a meditative atmosphere that would indeed be seductive.

The lure of the opportunity to study in Japan does not overshadow my obligations to the program. I am infectiously dedicated to design and would bring with me the fresh ideas of New York and the West. I eagerly anticipate interacting and exchanging thoughts with the other participants. It would also be a unique opportunity to share our cultures and gain a deeper understanding of our diversity. In understanding ourselves we can gain a greater knowledge of the true nature of design. There is an adage that says even the longest journey begins with a single step.

However, to reach our destination we must keep stepping. The 2007 International Studies program is a vital step on my path to becoming a designer and Japan is the centerpiece of my design philosophy. The opportunity to study the rich history of Eastern design in the crucible of its creation would be invaluable to me. I am confident that I would succeed in the program and could offer the program the breadth of my experience in return. It is my hope that on day I can use this experience to bring serenity and the "seductiveness of the flower" to the inhabitants of a steel and concrete jungle.
