Download file to see previous pages The data that was used in the study was obtained from the King Fahad Specialist Hospital – Eastern Region, Dammam, Saudi Arabia. 675 women, of whom 225 had reported having breast cancer, were involved in the study. The remaining 450 women were disease-free and were used as age-matched controls. The findings of how different factors are associated with an increased risk of development of breast cancer are discussed in this chapter. It is from the discussion of the findings of the study and the conclusions that are drawn from them that recommendations are made. The recommendations are made to different stakeholders in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, including the government, healthcare institutions, and individuals.

8.2 Education and breast cancer
To determine whether a causal relationship exists between the level of education and the occurrence of breast cancer among women in Eastern Saudi Arabia, the study asked the following research question: ‘Is there an association between education level and breast cancer in the Eastern region of Saudi Arabia?’ The results from the conditional logistic regression model (adjusted odds ratio) that was used in the hospital-based care control study indicate that there is an association between one’s education level and breast cancer in the Eastern region of Saudi Arabia. The odds of breast cancer occurring are significantly decreased among women who have a relatively higher level of education.

Therefore, from the results of the study, it was found that education has a generally negative effect on the occurrence of breast cancer among women in Eastern Saudi Arabia.
These results are consistent with what has been found in other different studies. For instance, Alghamdi et al. (2015, n.pag), it was found that a high level of education among Saudi women is considered a protective factor against the occurrence of breast cancer. It was found that the odds of the disease occurring among the women who formed the sample that was used in the study decreased by 95% as compared to less educated women (Alghamdi et al. 2015, n.pag). In a different study, Popoola, Igwilo, and Sowunmi (2013, p. 63) found that a positive correlation between literacy and breast cancer within the general population exists.  ...Download file to see next pages Read More
