How the Media Is Leading American Society - Essay Example

The purpose of the paper is to illustrate in detail how the media is leading American society in the wrong direction as their news is often based on a biased perspective (Burrowes, 2012). Thus, it is a debatable paper with a conclusion that describes my personal view of the entire assignment.

Summary of the issue

            From the introduction, it is apparent that the media fraternity is leading the world, especially the United States citizens in the wrong direction. Basically, it is the media which is assuming the responsibility of telling citizens what is happening within society. As a result, the information is often shared from a biased perspective. As a result, people get the wrong information which ultimately hinders them from knowing the entire truth Coville, 2010). Additionally, most journalists and editors are using the media platform to write or talk about outdated information so as to get a market for their blogs and medium of expressions like articles, magazines, and television. It is no longer about giving satisfactory news, but people are writing about things based on their own points of view. Fundamentally, it is the reason, the media is being termed as “media bullshit”, as what they are offering as news consists of lies and biasness (Pernisco, 2010, 12-16).

My position

            From my own point of view, I can confidently say that media is not bullshit as it often informs society on what is really going on. Without the media, a lot of people would be un-informed on most of the significant matters that are going on in the United States. Furthermore, it has to be noted that the media comes in the form of television, the internet, the radio, newspaper, and magazines (Mendelson, 2012, 45-48). Significantly, the absence of the above-mentioned source of medium would be difficult for the citizens of the United States to be aware of what is taking place. The media has been utilized to inform American society about the performance of the government, prominent individuals, and the community as a whole (Qualman, 2012, 12-14). Essentially, I believe that the media cannot be regarded as “media bullshit” as information shared by the public often brings about more good than harm.

Counter position

            According to an article by Burrowes (2015), “The combination of inexperienced and busy marketers, conflicted agencies, and incentivized media owners are coming up with a situation of unprecedented media bullshit”. The author apparently has done some research and has come up with the conclusion that the services being initiated by the media industry are based on a bullshit entity. The perception is based on the challenges that the journalists go through, i.e. being forced to give false news as a way of gaining a bigger platform. According to Coville (2010), “Usually, it is not part of anybody’s grand scheme to brainwash you, but rather the result of newsrooms being staffed by fallible and opinionated humans”. Significantly, the implication of the above quote signifies that the media is indeed biased as what is often offered is not what is right. Furthermore, it clarifies that journalists are at times forced to give false information in order to reach out to more viewers. Thus, the implication here is that the media indeed has to be looked at as “media bullshit” as what is given to the public is not always true.

Conclusion

            To sum up: the paper enumerates an argumentative narration on media bullshit based on my personal opinion and from a researched perspective. Significantly, it is apparent that media bullshits are facts because what is shared with the public is not based on facts, but is meant for personal benefit. Coville and   Burrowes give facts based on research they have undertaken, which is an indication that the contents of media bullshit are taking place in American Society. Thus, it is appropriate for American society to always analyze information from the media based on several platforms before a conclusion is made. By analyzing the information from several platforms, there will be a possibility of gaining information that counters media bullshit in America as a whole.
