Download file to see previous pages The RBV has gained the attention of a number of authors and practitioners who undertake the perspective that firms can improve their performance, strengthen their competitiveness (through achieving competitive advantage) and excel in markets or industries by being able to differentiate themselves on the basis of transforming their unique resources into corporate strategy.

The Resource-Based View of the firm, however, as Begermann (2006) indicates, pertains to two fundamental constructs other than the strategic management; the building of competencies and the sustainability of capabilities. However, prior to exploring these constructs, there needs to be a more thorough analysis of the RBV’s main points regarding the organizational unique resources. According to Barney (1991), the RBV places attention on the advantage gained by the resources that are scarce, imperfectly imitable and not- substitutable. Furthermore, as Barney (1991) stresses the particular perspective views firms’ resources as distinctive, unique, specific and differentiating in terms of distinguishing those organizations from their rivals. The term ‘resources’ signifies a bundle of tangible and intangible assets that companies have at their disposal and can eventually leverage for strengthening their competitive edges. Such resources can be competent employees, a technology employed, capital and other physical or non – physical assets such as brands and reputation that are satisfying the criteria of resource immobility and resource diversity as identified by Begermann (2006). These two concepts (immobility and diversity) pertain to the distinction between each firm’s resources and its competitors’ resources.
