Put a deadline on the use of the gift card. This may prompt some lazy people to get themselves into gear and go out and use their gift cards. Too many people delay using the gift card and just tell themselves that they will use it later, without giving a definitive date.
Offer discounts on other products when a customer uses a gift card. If a customer feels that they will gain something extra by using their gift card, then they would be more likely to do so. Although it may seem not smart to offer discounts on other products, getting customers to use their gift cards actually results in increased spending.
Allow customers to exchange their gift cards for 80% of the value of the card. This would give customers the choice over whether to use the gift card or not.
