? Computer Science and IT Experiences and Emotions A good product design is supposed to create pleasant experiences to the users during the life cycle of the product. How people react to the outside appearance of the product matters a lot according to Norman (2004). The success of a product in the market is determined by the reception of customers when the product gets into the market. The more they appreciate the product, the more their likelihood of purchasing the said product. Norman (2004) groups customer’s appreciation into visceral appreciation and aesthetic appreciation. He argues that the emotions that the appearance creates to people determines their level of appreciation of that particular product. Whatever people see, they react by assigning meaning and value to the item or product. It is by this understanding that product manufacturers try to incorporate affective, behavioural, and cognitive aspects into a product. In the visceral aspects of a product design, the customer is more concerned with how much they like or dislike the product, their emotional response towards the same product, the product’s dichotomous description, whether it is safe or dangerous, pretty or ugly, good or bad. Norman relates these reactions to appearance of the product, and its effects on the customer on their cognitive and affect. The sight of the product, its texture, sound, or smell affects how a person appreciates that product. If the product is eye catching, the likelihood of a person preferring it to another product is high. Women are most likely to be influenced by the look and smell, when buying a product (Norman, 2004). Anaesthetics in philosophical terms refer to the nature of art, beauty, and taste with a bigger creation of beauty. It mostly focuses on sensory values and more concerned with judgement. When manufacturing a product, the manufacturer keeps in mind the beauty of such a product for attraction to the people. It is more logic and normal, in deed an expectation that a person is likely to be attracted to a beautiful item than a bad looking item. In justifying his ideas Norman, classified these as behavioural aspects of attraction. According to Norman, a company goes a long way in trying to improve its sales by improving on the image of its products. However, I do not agree with him wholly. The quality of a product is what brings more satisfaction to a customer than just its image. A good-looking product is likely to enjoy high sales over the first few days of its launch. When customers keep using the same product repeatedly, they get to understand the quality and satisfaction they get from the product. If the products are of low quality and with little satisfaction, consumers start avoiding the products. This way, sales start diminishing, as other superior brands, regardless of whether they have a good appearance or not. Thus, image is not everything in the long run, as quality and satisfaction will at the end of the day prevail. 2. Philosophers’ Tool Kit Logic versus Rhetoric The iPod has a fun game that a person can play with close friends. The game allows a person to imagine and guess the songs that would probably be on the most played playlist of the famous people. By imagining about the most famous people in the world, it makes them appear to be closer and make them more real. It is a fact that the game has been installed in the iPod, and perfectly serves its intended purpose of imagining worlds’ famous people and what they might be playing in their iPods, but it is rhetoric trying to make them appear closer. It is just a fantasy, may be a hoax that the people could be anywhere close in the region. This is just a game and there is no reality associated with the game, as people play it for fun only (Wittkower, 2008). Explanations It is factual that we live in a designed world, with everything that we use being a design by another person. The design takes the philosophical commitments of everyday life, and not random designs. Every design however took quite some time to develop, and only recently, everything we use has been designed to increase anaesthetic pleasures. Logical Analysis The writer draws a comparison of design evolution with a swinging pendulum between two poles that the writer goes on to term as beauty and truth, with a more candid example of a frivolity and functionality. The swinging pendulum between the poles brings alive the feelings of the society as it shifts from idealism to realism. Ethics The aspect of the iPod being reproduced into many forms and imitations being made about the device is an ethical issue. For philosophers, ethics is an important aspect of life since it incorporates respect. However, the firms out to make imitations of the device contravene this belief and get involved in unethical forms of business. Facts and Logic The iPod has been a respected device all over the world and its presence is all over the globe. It is a fact that it was made for the able people, meant for a class of its own, a class of people with a lifestyle and a people who love sense of style. It is also a fact that people in the bottom of the income margin were meant to be cut off from receiving the services of the iPod. However, its popularity, of which the manufacturers did not anticipate, is what creates the logic part of the device’s story. Many companies have reproduced the iPod, with China making clones that are targeted at the low end market. It is arguably true that people want to feel the prestige of owning an iPod. The device whose colour was meant to be only white is now available in all types of colours. In future, ethics will play a big role in my life. It is a form of showing respect to other people, their lives, and property. The importance of respect in ensuring peaceful co-existence cannot be overlooked. Facts and logic will also play a big role in my life ahead especially because acting in a field of an informed judgement is a better way of decision making than speculation. Facts help in making of informed judgements, while on its part logic deduces the possibilities and classify them in accordance to their priorities. Logic is a part of common sense application that gives a better perception of an underlying situation without the use of factual information. Understanding the value an explanation has in saving a situation is important when dealing with a problem. Sometimes mistakes occur without our consent or plan. Explanation comes in the wave of saving such situations by giving a view of the conditions of actual situation. These philosophers’ tool kits are what would mostly apply in my life and I would make use of them every now and then. 3. People Always Talk It does not matter whether a person is listening or not, but people will always talk. Whether the subject is listening or not, people will keep on talking about if, they have something to say. Paying attention to what people have to say about oneself could be more bothering and disturbing. It is unlikely that people will talk many positives about a particular person. Rumour spreads faster, and bad news sells more than good news, making rumours more pleasing to listen to than facts. Media is good in spreading rumour and sparking out uproars, which makes headlines more than real news. Human nature justifies the negative tendency of people paying more attention to negative news. Especially for the celebrities, the reality of the world talking about them and their lives becomes more real and practical. The media will write and comment about anything in relation to a public figure’s life, of which in most cases they focus on private life. The media will stop at nothing in trying to make a headline, with any news that will catch the people being given more priority. By virtue of general understanding of the media and more so human psychology, we learn to accept these as facts and get to live with it, that people will always talk whether you are listening or not. Financing Media The mode of financing the media is a complicated and a controversial affair. Most people believe the investors in the industry are the sole financiers. Others assume external investors are responsible, while others believe that the media is donor funded. The media is actually financed by taxes, and more so levies. The digital media mostly, when put into consideration, is financed through taxes in form of levies. Buying monthly subscription for a home television is a levy and a tax, which has been imposed indirectly in the composition. The idea of paying a monthly subscription for television is a way by the government of taxing the citizens. The little amount people are charged in order to either receive information is a levy and an added tax. Development of Media The development of media has various theories, with one of them linking its development from revenues in pornography business. In the times of its development and inception of visual media, the pornography business was thriving with a lot of revenues and proceeds. It is believed that prominent business people in the pornography business were the originators of the modern media, which first came as analogue before the upgrade in recent times to digital. Selling of pornography materials in the past, and still today is a business that has more returns than it is seen in the face of the common person. Sex films and video tapes were a means of racking in millions into the pockets of the business people. The money was then used in funding the ideas of airing more positive content to the people. However, due to increased competition, revenues from the business became minimal as markets started getting saturated and sales begun diminishing. The only alternative the business people had was to either diversify or pull out of business altogether. The later was more unlikely, and so the only option was a diversification of their businesses. The idea of the current form of media was burn this way. The need for people to air positive content that would be more acceptable by the authorities and by the general public as well as avoid criticism from the church, the idea of visual media was born with the current content. Although in the early days pornography material was still being aired, it has reduced considerably over time. Media will always air and send their most preferred stories in order to win customers. Whether the invention was from pornographic revenues or clean way. It has lived to make life easy and liveable. Albeit its critics, the media is credited with being the source of information and entertainment. Whether celebrities accuse the media with tainting their image and spreading negative publicity, indirectly the media has been on the front line in marketing them. Most people do not care much about the evolution of media, its coming existence or even its development. Most people do not even care about who funds the media, what the care about mostly is the airing of their favourite programs. References Liana, E.
