Company Analysis Number Introduction Mayo Clinic, Arizona is a nonprofit medical organization that operates under the Mayo Clinic medical practice and research group, and specializes in treating tertiary care. Though Mayo Clinic was founded in Rochester, Minnesota in 1889, Mayo Clinic Hospital in Phoenix, Arizona was opened in the fall of 1998 to provide high quality medical services in inpatient medical care, in an environment that is conducive and efficient, to both visitors and patients. Although Mayo Clinic has a number of founders in the persons of William W. Mayo, William J. Mayo, Charles H. Mayo, Henry S. Plummer, Christopher Graham, Star Judd, Donald Balfour and Melvin Millet, yet it is under the ownership of Mayo Properties Association. This is because, after the chief founder W. W. Mayo passed on in 1919, the Mayo Brothers who had then assumed ownership, voluntarily transferred proprietorship to the Mayo Properties Association. It is at this juncture that Mayo Clinic began being managed under group practice, proper. The mission of the hospital is to inspire hope, and to contribute wellness and health, through the provision of the best treatment and care to every patient through an integrated approach to clinical practice, education and healthcare research. Mayo Clinic’s vision statement is to have Mayo Clinic operating, based on the values that its founders, the Sisters of St. Francis and the original Mayo physicians had during the founding of the hospital. These values are compassion, respect, healing, integrity, excellence, teamwork, stewardship and innovation (Mayo Clinic, 2012). There are several services that Mayo Clinic, Arizona provides. They include the dispensation of healthcare services and treatment, education and research. Mayo Clinic integrates these efforts into a complex whole so as to make its objective, mission and vision attainable. To ensure that the standard healthcare services is not compromised, physicians working for Mayo Clinics have fixed remunerations that are not tied to patient volume. This ensures that physicians spend more time with patients. Mayo Clinic, Arizona is a seven-storey facility which has 244 licensed beds. There are 18 theaters and Level II emergency department in Mayo Clinic. Some of the specialties that Mayo Clinic, Arizona deals in, in the provision of healthcare services include cardiology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, geriatrics, hematology, critical care medicine, oncology, hepatology, nephrology, rheumatology, pediatrics, respirology, and even sleep medicine. To facilitate medical research efforts, Mayo Clinic has its Board of Mayo Clinic Institutional Review which reviews progressing human research studies which currently number 8,000. The medical researches are then published in peer-reviewed medical journal articles. In 2012, the Buyers Healthcare Action Group included Mayo Clinic in the 2012 Bridges to Excellence program. So prestigious is this award that only 49 hospitals qualified for it. On June 20th, the Center for Medicaid and Medicare Innovation (CMMI) awarded Mayo Clinic with a 60 million dollar award, because of Mayo Clinic’s efforts in improving healthcare services delivery. Mayo Clinic used this grant to improve care and outcomes for patients with diabetes and cardiovascular diseases, and those with chronic conditions. Other organizations and agencies which have accorded Mayo Clinic with monetary grants because of positive ratings include Beacon, the Rochester Epidemiology Project and the Strategic Health IT Advanced Research Project Programs (SHARP). On January 1st, 2010, the US President Barack Obama hailed Mayo Clinic as a national paragon of efficient healthcare. Mayo Clinic’s outstanding performance is multiply attested in many blogs and websites such as the Florida Times Union. All these awards and grants that Mayo Clinic Arizona has received are clear indicators of the high ratings that Mayo Clinic and its services enjoy. Mayo Clinic’s success is partly attributable to the diverse sources of funding that it has. Primarily, the money that is accrued from Mayo Clinic’s healthcare services provision is ploughed back to facilitate its operations. In 2011 alone, Mayo Clinic made more than 610 million US dollars as its net operating income. This was equivalent to an operating margin that exceeds 7%, and thereby giving the institution the chance to carry on with its long-term objectives. In the same year, Mayo Clinic also made 196 million from its pension fund. Mayo Clinic also welcomes donations and grants from stakeholders in the healthcare services sector and well wishers. For instance, in 2011, Mayo Clinic received 318 million US dollars from grateful patients alone. The funds that come from a myriad of stakeholders in form of grants and monetary awards have taken Mayo Clinic a long way. Some of these organizations are Bridges to Excellence program, CMMI, the Rochester Epidemiology Project and the Strategic Health IT Advanced Research Project Programs. Mayo Clinic operates as part of network, namely, the Mayo Properties Association. This happened after the Mayo Brothers voluntarily transferred ownership to this umbrella body. The Mayo Clinic Board of Directors consists of 33 people who act as the hospital’s governing body. The Board of Directors exercises overall responsibility for clinical and therapeutic practices scientific and educational missions, charitable events and values, and all the roles that are carried within the auspices of the Mayo Clinic. The appointment of the members of the board of directors is done by the shareholders of the Mayo Clinic in an annual general meeting. At times, a member has been selected through the issuance of a proxy statement. Some of the board members include Robert E. Allen, Philip R. Lee, M.D., Donald M. Stewart, D.P.A., Elias Zerhouni, M.D, and George C. Dillion (Mayo Clinic, 2012). Another feather in Mayo Clinic’s cap is the number of foundations that it has to its name. Some of these foundations include the Mayo Clinic Foundation for Medical Research and Education, and the Mayo Clinic Scholarship Foundation. As touching community education, Mayo Clinic’s curriculum covers public health issues, medicine and epidemiology. The popularity of Mayo Clinic is ubiquitous because of the special services it offers, at a very subsidized rate, as a nonprofit organization. Apart from the aforementioned specialized treatments that the hospital offers, some of the special services that Mayo Clinic engages in include hyperbaric oxygen therapy, executive flight physicals, attitude physiology research, FAA flight physicals, corporate medical directorship, in-flight medical assistance FAA special issuance consultations and medical assessments for the civilian space flight. Mayo Clinic has a lot of job opportunities at the moment. Research fellow, visiting scientist, research trainee, postdoctoral fellow, special project associate and research collaborator, are some of the vacant portfolios and the most frequent openings in Mayo Clinic, presently. That Mayo Clinic is a forward-looking hospital is underscored by the strategic planning objectives that it has rolled out for the oncoming year. In this light, oncologists, radiologists, surgeons, dentists, pediatricians, ophthalmologists, dermatologists, and even general practitioners, form a unified community of the hospital’s staff, pulling together in one collaborative effort. Through the fixed-salary policy and commitment to issuing special medical treatment, education and research, Mayo Clinic has managed to curve itself, a niche in the healthcare sector of the United States. Being a nonprofit medical organization that started in 1889 with meager resources, Mayo Clinic serves as a stark reminder to the fact that organizational success is mostly promoted by commitment to occupational ethics, client (patient) satisfaction and corporate social responsibility.
