It is one of the corporation aims to invest on the social responsibility as part of their approach in incorporating sustainability in the business so as justify the legal requirement, improve and maintain its corporate reputation and also as a tool of competitive edging. The project is based on Waste management through recycling and efficient operation, Climate conservation, Water management, Energy sustainability and Transparency sustainability and the stakeholders who involved included employees, general public, shareholders and the government. INTRODUCTION The project to be analyzed is Coca-Cola company project which its initiative is to create corporate social responsibility by participating in the community service program as a way of giving back or as a sign of appreciation to the community that keeps them in the industry. Project entailed energy management and climate protection, water conservation, sustainable way of packaging and ensuring the product is safe from any defects and the analysis is done based on the result of the project in the year 2011. Coca-cola is a multi-international company therefore the analysis was done basing on some of its branches that is turkey and Jordan plant. OBJECTIVE AND SCOPE. The major objective of this project is to incorporate the aspect of sustainability in the business prosperity and also ensure that they share their benefits with the community with the aim of maintaining their market share and reaching new markets. The scope of the work covered: 1. Waste management through recycling and efficient operation. 2. Climate conservation. 3. Water management. 4. Energy sustainability. 5. Transparency sustainability. STAKEHOLDER’S ANALYSIS. These are the people who have interest in corporate social responsibility project launched by the company. These stakeholders include: community, management, employees, shareholders and the government in which it is under it. Community- the company it self is established in a community and there is interdependence between the company and the community that is the company provides goods and services while the community consumes the same good at a consideration. Therefore, in absence of any of the two factors will automatically rule out the other factor. Thus the aim of the project was to change the mind set of the consumer that the company is always taking from them and they continually enjoy high profit selfishly and it doesn’t keep in mind the person contributing that wealth. The project entails providing proper water management practices in the community, building schools, appreciating talents from the students by organizing matches like football challenge. Management- the main interest of management in this project is to ensure that the objective set for the project are accomplished and their key role after implementation is to correct, add or remove information in order to achieve the most desirable goals. The goals are investing on sustainability in environment which every organisation is concerned with and also improving and maintaining their reputation in their view of their customers in order to gain their loyalty. At some point the management always measures the impact of the project on the set objective if it is responding (success) or not (failure) in order to establish whether to continue with the project or not. The composition and responsibilities of the committee is outlined in the annual statutory report under “Corporate social committee” Coca-Cola, 2012 annual report Employees- it is a corporate social responsibility of the company to ensure that the employee is taken care of, for example providing recreational facilities such as fields, providing them with clean environment to work, social amenities and any other additional benefit that might not be reflected directly in the output but through morale of the employee to work hard on the achievements of the company set goals. Therefore, employee is relevant to this project. Shareholders- they are people who invest on the company by contributing in capital formation through buying of shares. Their involvement as stakeholders to the project is that they have to ensure their money is used well and the projects implement is feasible in that the benefit is seen and it will benefit them achieve their goals of wealth maximization. Corporate social responsibility is leads to shareholder wealth maximization and satisfaction since it improves the profit levels and also reputation of the company. Government- The government is the most important stakeholder to this project since for the project to be implemented it has to adhere to the rules and regulation basing on the laws of the country. The project implemented by coca-cola company has numerous advantages to the country thus it received approvals and support by allowing them to partner in some of the social need delivery like partnering on tree planting, building of schools. Furthermore, the government had interest on the project since some of its citizens were employed in the process thus reducing unemployment and improving the NDP of the country. PROJECT MANAGEMENT. The most important part in project success is planning stage that is finding the possible way accomplishing certain objective and from the possible ways the best is chosen. “Defining and refining objectives and seeking the best of alternative courses of action to attain these”. (Project service centre, Project Management and Analysis). It is the followed by project execution then controlling and lastly closure of the project after accomplishment of the objective or if the project fails to attain the set objective. The whole project was planned on the basis of four variables that is: management of energy sustainability, waste management through recycling and efficient use of materials to reduce wastage, transparency strategy, climate conservation and the last variable is water management which combines to form the whole project of corporate responsibility by parent and its subsidiary companies. Energy sustainability - it entails carbon emission and energy consumption in the company, this was achieved by incorporating employees and international bodies and in addition to this they reengineered their production and thus enabling them to be role model to what they were campaigning that is sustainable energy management. Waste management-the company also concentrated on the waste management by ensuring they recycled their waste instead of just disposing them and also using efficient materials and using models to minimize waste. Transparency strategies- it is almost compulsory for each firm to be transparent in its financial, environment and social participation that is the coca-cola company not only gained financially but they went extra mile of giving back to society by implementing environmental conservation control and also availing social needs to enable the company co-exist with the inhabitants of the community in which they are based in. Climate conservation- This entails cutting their carbon emission rate and also participating in world environmental conservation programs as one of the ways of implementing their project of corporate social responsibility. Water management- Due to the increasing population water has become a diminishing resource thus the company saw need to dwell their project on this too. They reduced their water consumption by reducing wastage and also treating waste before disposing them to water bodies such as rivers and lakes. It also funded water management projects and participated in international forums on water management. Human welfare and response to a distress need- in addition to the above variables the project included company way of respond in providing social needs and responding in a distressing situation that is in the time of a national disaster such as earthquake. SUCCESS OF THE PROJECT. On analyzing the success of the project, we look at the success of each variable which it will combined to rate the average performance of the overall project. The variables responded positively to the context and it had the following impact to the company and all other stakeholders: On energy sustainability the company implemented efficient operational practices which cut out on energy waste by a great proportion and to support the above assertion three of coca-cola company receives ISO certification of Energy Management System standard certificate and their 2012-2013 plans is to ensure the are given ISO certification in all of their operation. For example in turkey plant they have managed to save energy of 121,903,311 kWh because of introducing coolers that doesn’t use hydro-Fluoro-carbon. “We achieved energy savings of 121,903,311 kWh…” (Coca-Cola CSR- 1 January 2011- 31december 2011). Waste management was one of their areas of concentration and they managed to increase their recycling percentage as follows: turkey plant increased by 0.58% and 2.89 in Jordan this signifies great success on the implementation of the project. “We increased the material recycle ratio by 2.89% in the Jordan operation, 0.39% in the Azerbaijan operation and 0.58% in the Turkey operation”. (Coca-Cola CSR 1 January 2011- 31december 2011). On climate conservation they played a major role in international programs on how to protect the environment and as a result they were rate among the best five companies at the carbon disclosure project which held in turkey. This marks their excellence in implementation of the project. They also introduced a new packing material which reduced environmental impact by 29.5%. Water management sustainability strategy also proved to be successful since they had cut on water wastage and also introduced rain water harvesting to a total of 6500m3 which was a great step. “We collected 1,500 m3 rain water in Izmir and 5,000 m3 in the Kazakhstan Plant with rain water harvesting project” (Coca-Cola CSR- 1 January 2011- 31december 2011). The company also responded to the earthquake victim and provided them with drinking water, food and clothing. In addition to that they trained their employees on various things concerning the industry. Therefore, proves the implementation of transparency strategy. “We took action in the first 24 hours through Kızılay and supplied drinking water for victims of the Van earthquake in Turkey. Then we continued our support with drinking water, clothes and cash with the contribution from our employees and the Coca-Cola foundation” (Coca-Cola CSR 1 January 2011- 31december 2011). CRITICAL ANALYSIS OF THE OUTCOME. The overall project was a success since each part of implementation process responded positively that is management of energy sustainability, waste management, transparency strategy, climate conservation and water management. The reason of success is that the stakeholders of the project were committed i.e. management allocated enough funds to the project, also the project was well planned by dividing them into smaller units and dealing with it as sub-unit of the bigger project (corporate social responsibility) and working as a team since they are many subsidiaries but working with only one aim of successfully implementing the project. And as a manger I should be committed in implementation, carefully take time planning the project, and allocate enough resources, breakdown of the project to small understandable sub-unit and creating team work in the company to ensure the whole organisation is after one common goal.
