The company is popular because of the services it renders, including Yahoo search engine and web portal. Other related services offered by the company include; Yahoo Mail, news, groups, finance, answers, directory, video sharing, advertising, a social media website, fantasy sports, and online mapping (Perez 2013). In a month, approximately 700 million individuals access yahoo websites in America alone. In more than 30 languages, Yahoo draws about half a billion consumers to its services every month (Perez 2013).

The company has designed its search and market places offerings to answer its customer’s questions on the pages of search results (Perez 2013). It offers solutions targeted by advertisers to its consumers. An example is the Right Media Exchange Is Yahoo.

• 1.2. History and Growth of the Company

The Company was founded in 1994 by some of Stanford University’s graduate students from the engineering department. These students created a website and called it “Jerry’s Guide to the World Wide Web” (Perez 2013). Initially, there was a different directory of other websites by the name, “David and Jerry’s Guide to the World Wide Web” (Perez 2013). This directory was unique because it was organized in a hierarchy as compared to other pages of searchable indexes (Perez 2013). “David and Jerry’s Guide to the World Wide Web was re-branded Yahoo” (Perez 2013). Later on, in 1995, the Yahoo.com domain was founded.

Yahoo is an acronym for a Hierarchical Officious Oracle. The word hierarchical illustrates how the database of Yahoo is laid from the bottom to the top. The word oracle means a source of wisdom and truth (Perez 2013). Finally the word officious describes the numerous office employees who are likely to use the Yahoo database to surf while at work. On the other hand, Yang and Filo insist that they selected the term Yahoo because of its jargon definition.
