Domain Define Team A group of People sharing one goal is a Team The Team performs collectively and collaborates in the same Project Members have different roles in the Team Every member must contribute his share Failure of one Member will affect Team Performance It can also result in failure of Mission Each Member must be supportive of others Team can have smaller groups with smaller agenda but all together must result in one common goal The Class is one Team with one common goal that is completing one specified Project The Project is divided into several small parts and distributed to sub groups of the Team The sub groups can complete small parts of the Project All parts of the Project are integrated to produce the complete Project Highlights Define the Team (2) what? A Team has a Project that the tutor has set for the class or the class may have set for itself why? The Team has to complete Project to enable the class to achieve some skill or acquire some knowledge who? The class will perform all tasks related to the Project when? A time frame has to be given for achievemnet of the goal. This can be broken into smaller sections for sub groups having their own schedule for completion of their respective tasks where? A locations is set for Team and sub group meetings can be class room, cafeteria or open areas as decided by the Team how? physical presence online presence video conferences other means of communication but the Team or sub goup must be together at same time for participation and collabotation. Participation must be interesting to ensure success of Project Purpose of Team Building Develop a sense of belonging Having common Obective or Goal Creating Understanding between Team Members Acceptance of Cross Cultural Differences Respecting Views Building Consensus Ability to work together Sharing of Ideas Learning to Share and Enjoying the relationship Objectives of Team Building 1. To establish common Understanding on relevant Terminology Advising Terminology for Project Explaining Terminology Confirming Understanding by each member 2. To address Team Building Areas like Skills – Find out Individual Skills Styles – Identify communication and expressive styles Approaches – Inform about methods Concepts – Explain the aim/opportunity area. Attitudes – Positive and right attitude results in success Behavior – Break down barriers, improve communications inside and outside class, and integrate members actions Techniques – Expand on ownership of Project. A successful change is ultimately successful because the Team owns it and see it as their change Challenges – These are road block that are to be overcome with understanding of the building blocks of the team described above 3. To provide ’real Life” Examples Set following Topic for Team discussion. Project called Gender Equality is a fundamental Right. (CEC)1 Traditionally woman seen as home maker only Modern world accepts woman as equal participant But Acceptance is qualified as there is pay discrimination She is also not acceptable in top Management position Those women who are at the top are there because they are exceptional All training is male oriented although females are more accomplished Their Accomplishment proven through scientific research Women are Multi-Taskers good mangers at home and in office Mothers understand training and management naturally Time has come for Society to acknowledge Motherhood as an Institution that produces workers and managers of tomorrow (Buchanann)2 Therefor Working Mothers must get place in Corporate Governance Discuss outline and ask Team to rally in support. 4. to transfer Skills in ’Team Building” to the Class - combine training, development, team-building, communications, motivation and planning. 5. to address ’how to become an effective Team Builder”? – Inspire the Team to achieve the goal by giving up individual need in favour of joint and common need. Roles Roles or Activities have to be assigned to the team or the sub groups Division according to skills and capabilites which have been already assessed Timelines are to be clearly understood within the larger framework key priorities and personal responsibilities/interest areas. Using the live example assign roles to team members to research the subject. Make 2 to 4 teams (depeding on size of class) and ask each to do seperate research like on the World Wide Web, Journals, Books and the Uninted Nations Agenda on Women. Within the team again assign roles to historical periods or geographical areas or the developed and underdeveloped societies and each to examine the given task in depth. Set Timeline for each team to submit results. Actions On completion of research the Teams to present these through slides and documents and edit content to formulate final report. The subgroups will also need to explain their respective methodologies and sources of research. The final report has to be arrived at by consus. This is the place to place emphasis on collaboration by means of communication and agreement. Rules You need to set rules of work and behaviour. State limitations and process of reporting and collaborating efforts of one member with others, one sub group with another. These working rules about setting up meetings and heirarchy are to be set at the begining of the Team building excercise. Tools for Team Building A Team is built for some Project. To build confidence in the Team and the use of following toolswill clarify the Project and help build better and effective Teams SWOT Analysis of the Project The SWOT analysis is a very simplistic tool, yet it is very popular because it conveys so much information: SWOT stands for 1. Strengths (S) on which to build, 2. Weaknesses (W) to rectify, 3. Opportunities (O) to consider and 4. Threats (T) to address Input/Output It is important to take the input of all Team Members but it should be time bound This helps them to gain confidence This makes them feel important to the Team Contibutions make Plans more widely accepted Inspires future Leadership Examples provide one or more typical examples for good/bad. A good Team will be exemplary if all steps mentioned above are followed as this will give equal opportunity to all. It will also encourage the feeling of One for All and All for one. A bad team is one that cannot agree on results due to absence of equal opportunities. There has to be a balanced approach for building good and effective teams. Exercises Involvement of the Group is the key to building Teams. Interactive participation is recommended in Brainstorming - Encouraging participation by everyone with their ideas Answering questions – In fact leaving open ended conversation to invite questions Working in groups – avoiding one-on-one situations Role play – Assigning different roles in games to bring out the pros and cons of an idea and role reversing to encourage flow of ideas Introducing Quizz to sharpen minds – suggested quiz (with answer at end)  Which film-maker has received the most Academy Awards (as at 2006)?
