Andy’s Recipe in Leadership Theory and Practice By Andy’s Recipe in Leadership and Practice Question Answer. The following reasons accounts for Andy Garafallo’s success in the Restaurant business. To begin with, Andy’s business is successful because of the excellent services that he provides for his customers; Andy confesses himself that customers keep coming to his business because they know that they will get good food. Secondly, Andy’s restaurant business is successful because of his public relation approach; in the case study that we have read, Andy says that customers come to his restaurant because they want to support someone with whom they can connect.
This fact shows that Andy has an excellent relation with his customers. An ability to relate well with customers is indeed a proven factor that contributes to success in business; this point is supported by Boynlon and Zmud in their article “An Assessment of Critical Success Factors”. In this article, Boynlon and Zmud argue that without skills in relating with customers well, one cannot expect substantial success in business. Thirdly, Andy’s restaurant business is successful because of Andy’s competent leadership skills.
One of Andy’s main leadership qualities is his ability to deal with his employees (managers), despite their various weaknesses. All the three managers of his restaurant business, i.e. Kelly, Danielle, and Patrick, have weaknesses that affect their performance in the business, but, despite these weaknesses, Andy is able to deal with them and to coach and to teach them to be better leaders. Andy’s strategy of management is that focusing on the strength, rather than the weaknesses of his employees.
Focusing on the strengths, rather, than the weaknesses of employees in business management is actually one of the best management models and it helps to prevent crisis between the managers and their employees (Daniel &Ronald, 1961). In the case study that we have read, we learn that helping people to become the best that they can is the goal of Andy for his restaurant employees. Andy’s focus and commitment on improving the leadership skills of his employees, therefore, is one of the main reasons behind Andy’s successful restaurant business.
Lastly, Andy’s restaurant business is successful because of honesty and good ethics in business. In the case study that we have read, we learn that Andy does not engage in any unethical practice like raising the prices of his items unfairly, with a view of raising the profits of the business. Andy says in the case study that you succeed in business by being what you should be. This fact shows that Andy is a honest business man guided by good business ethics. In general, those are the main reasons behind Andy’s successful restaurant business.
Question 2 Answer. From skills perspective, I would describe the three managers as follows. Firstly, I would describe Kelly as a competent and reliable leader. From the case study, we learn that Kelly is quite competent in her role as kitchen manager and she plays her roles competently; also, we learn from the case study that Kelly is honest and dependable. Kelly, however, needs to improve in the area of her relationship with her other employees of the restaurant; in the case study, we learn that Kelly has problems in getting along with other employees of the restaurant like the salespeople and delivery people.
Secondly, Danielle can be described as a friendly and cooperative manager. In the case study, we learn that Danielle buys into Andy’s idea of putting customer’s interest first; we also learn from the case study that, Danielle is quite hospitable. Despite these strengths, however, Danielle needs to improve in the area of numbers- this is because we learn from the article that Danielle is lousy with numbers. Thirdly, Patrick can be described as competent and morally upright manager; this is because we learn from the case study that Patrick has strong work ethic.
Patrick, however, needs to improve in the area of his customers; this is because we learn from the case study that Patrick treats his customers as if they do not have emotions. Question 3 Answer. I would describe Andy’s two main competencies as follows. First, Andy is a role model; this is because we learn from the case study that Andy coaches and teaches his employees to be the best that they can. Secondly, Andy focuses on the strengths of his employees. Andy’s leadership suggests that one does not need all the three leadership skills in order to be competent in leadership.
