Individual Application Paper Analysis As one of the longest serving waiter, in the chain of Franklin café groups, I deemed myself knowledgeable in the daily operations of the business. Therefore, my three years in the Franklin café group was purposeful and I hold it dear to me when things are not going right. However, sometime I look at the situation and the decisions of the general manager, Erick, who was appointed to the general manager’s position after my declination of the post because of my impending studies, and ask myself some questions. Is he incompetent? Is he behaving unprofessional? Which managerial ethics does he possess? On the other hand, I am the one with the problem. Alternatively, am I a perfectionist? All these questions do arise especially after Erick was elevated to that position of the general manager. Am not jealous of him but I think his actions are biased and unprofessional. This is because he usually hires his friends to work in the café, some of whom are not qualified. Furthermore, he no longer observes the training policies set down for the organization. Long before his appointment, we used to follow and respect the training policies of the organization. I think generally I don’t like Erick the manager. I do not know whether my dislike for Erick will create a negative attitude toward him or am just being biased. His style of management does not conform to the normal style of management which has been in existence since I joined Franklin group of companies. I do not welcome his tendency of hiring his friend to work in the restaurant because some are incompetent like Colleen. Take a scenario of an episode, which occurred last Saturday night, and you will agree with me. The policies of the restaurant stipulate that an employee cannot leave the café at the end of the working period before being released by the manager. However, on the material Saturday, Colleen, one of the friends of Erick, the general manager, who was working in the restaurant as a waiter was to go home at 11.30 pm but was not yet released by the manager and she was still lingering in the dining room. Common sense dictates that as a worker in the restaurant and not yet released, you are entitled to work until the time the manager will officially release you. However, that was not the case with Colleen. To her, upon clocking 11.30 pm, she knew she was officially off. This clearly portrays how the training policies of the restaurants are no longer applied and the manager is not concerned even a little. Her behavior made me dislike her so much because she does not value work and responds to me rudely. What further shocked me that Saturday night was when two clients came. For almost ten minutes, the client waits seated and no waiter comes to serve him or her. This shows high level of disorganization, laziness and uncaring nature of the workers of the restaurant. It is quite shocking and even disturbing when a client sits in the dining room for over ten minutes waiting to be served and yet another waiter lingers around and claims she did not spot the clients. Sincerely, what is the work of a waiter if you cannot see a patron seated in the dining room where you serve? To me, such as a response from a waiter or a manager is rude and deserves immediate action by the owners of the restaurant. If I were the owner of the Franklin café groups, I would sack the manager and the waiter and radically change the operations of the restaurant. Similarly, when the image of the restaurant I hold dearly and have served diligently for three is being tainted, I feel bad. By the customers leaving while cursing and swearing that they will never come back to the restaurant shows how the action of the waiter resulted negatively to the image of the restaurant. It is always good to treat the customers with respect in the business world and that is why I got upset that Saturday night when I heard the sentiments of the customers and later decided to approach the management despite the fact that I knew what could be response of the manager. My Action plan After studying the situation in the restaurant for some time now and was not pleased with the way it was being managed, I look for an opportune moment to air my views. After the episode of the material Saturday, I approached the customers to get to understand the problem and the reason they were leaving while upset and has not been served. Furthermore, after getting and listening to the clients who swore never to come back again, I took the matter with the manager as a concerned employee of the firm. However, as predicted, the response of the manager and the way he conversed with me could tell a lot about him. His unconcerned nature is portrayed when he never takes my complaints, which are worth and useful to the general wellbeing of the company. He brushes me off and never takes any action against his crony who was worth discipline. Description of the action I took After realizing of the deteriorating nature of the situation in the restaurants, I identified the following problems in the organization, which needs immediate attendance, and I need to accomplish them. 1) Training policies are not followed by the workers 2) Manager hires his friends to work in the restaurant 3) The workers are not concerned about the well being of the Franklin café company 4) Few waiters are assigned when many clients are expected After identifying the problems in the restaurant, I realized that some of the listed identified problems I could not achieve without requesting for help from the owners and some of the workers in the restaurant. Furthermore, I ensured that the expertise, system of action, and the people to help me were available. The actions included: 1) I plan to talk with the manager about the deteriorating nature in the restaurant and the current behavior o f the workers. Furthermore, I will talk to him about his style of management of hiring his friends. If that fails, I go to plan number two. 2) I planned to talk with the owners of Franklin café groups about the situation in the restaurant. Because of the trust bestowed to me by the owner, I wish to specifically talk about the manager’s action of hiring his friends who are incompetent, the manner in which workers no longer respect the training policies and the episode of the Saturday night. 3) I wish also to seek the help of the employees who were working in the restaurant before and were not hired by Erick to educate others on the training policies of the restaurant. My Reflections From the whole of the experiment, I was able to learn many things about myself. First, I learnt that I am dedicated to service delivery and hold the company I work in dearly. Furthermore, I realized that am trustworthy to the employers. Similarly, I understood that am able to analyze a situation in the organization when things are right or wrong and has the courage to take action. Furthermore, I realized that my plan of action could bring change to the organization however, the post I hold in the company. Lastly, I realized that am capable of improving the image and save a situation in an organization when things are not right. References Mind tools. (2013).
