Extract of sample "Analyzing a Job Description"

A job description refers to the intricate details about the job opening that a firm includes in the advertisement of a vacancy. These details entail what the prospective employee would do to the firm and some of the basic conditions that the job requires the individual to meet. These details are run in the adverts to give the interested parties a chance to compare their personal characteristics and whether they would be of essence in the process of filling a given position in a firm (Richard, 2003). The job descriptions, thus, offer a preliminary ground for elimination as only those members of the public who qualify and are interested in the undertakings of the job would apply for consideration. These descriptions are formulated by the human resource department of the company; they are arrived at after the workforce requirements are comprehensively scrutinized since the description would give the type of applicants that the firm would receive. A part from mere undertakings and the technical skills that are of relevance in undertaking these responsibilities, the details should include such personal features that would ease the process of one holding the position. In this manner, the firm ensures that the employees it eventually hires would be of the traits that would be easy to effectively manage (Thomas & Michael, 2001). A New York hospitality firm, Travel care company Limited, has for the past three years operated in the American market offering such services in hotel booking, flight ticketing, car rental and hiring . The company has decided to venture into the tour industry for the first time. The firm is, therefore, diversifying its services and is expanding to other cities in America as well. Their first destination following this diversification is the city of Los Angels. A number of new positions have, as a result, been created and the firm aims to hire several of these within the five weeks preceding the formal opening of the Los Angel’s offices. Memo Travel Care Limited Company P. O Box 443211- New York Tel 002244363 Fax 555444 E-mail: info@humanresource.com Our Ref: Your ref: From: The Human Resources Manager To: The Hiring manager Subject: Advertisement of the new job openings Following the planned diversification of the firm, two fundamental departments have been created and would thus require staffing. It is with that effect that this memo seeks validity. The firm will be seeking to employ twenty five drivers and tour guides of similar number. Tour guides Details and requirements The individuals will be responding to the head of department on tourism from which orders and terms of daily engagements will be communicated on daily basis. They will be tasked with the mandate of taking the tourists on safaris. Their main task will be to ensure that the tourists receive care while on the trip. The trips would vary in context depending on the one that each tourist would book. This, therefore, implies that the tour guides will not be having any specific operation but theirs would vary from picking the tourists from the airports, bus or train stations, booking them into their hotels and ensuring that they receive the best treatment as is espoused in the company’s goal and objectives. Interested applicants must be holders of a college certificate in hospitality and/ or tour guiding. A degree in the same would be given more consideration. Besides, these persons must not have any previous criminal records. They must also be fluent speakers of English and two other languages most preferable French and Arabic. The more languages one can speak the better chance that the person would stand to be employed. The applicants must be of high moral and ethical behaviors as any misdemeanor will not be condoned. Our employees must be cheerful and extremely receptive; the interested parties must also bear the same and be prepared to work in a very competitive environment. The extensive travelling that the job entails would require a yellow fever and other contagious ailments test. An international passport would also be mandatory. The position is permanent and pensionable. Drivers Details and requirements The drivers will in most occasions drive the tour vans, trucks and minibuses that will be taking tourists to various attraction sites in and out of the city of Los Angels. They will be responding to the head of department on tourism and will be scheduled as the department will deem fit. This is a job that will be performed on a shift basis with each individual working for a maximum of eleven hours a day and a weekend rest every fortnight. Interested applicants must be able to speak English and any other two foreign languages most preferably French and Germany. The individuals must also be eighteen years old and above with a valid American driving license with at least two years experience of driving. This being a tour firm, it would also be advantageous if one is of high moral standards. A smile and a high sense of humor would be appreciated. This position will be given on a two year contract that will be renewable with the expiry of every term. Consideration for rehiring will largely depend on the performance in the first term. Yours faithfully, The Human Resource Manager, Arnold Joe Hopkins The firm discussed above specializes in offering hospitality services. Tourism is an area of specialization under the hospitality umbrella. Travel care decides to include it into their operations as a way to achieve their main objective which is to expand and diversify their operations. Every single business venture normally have a dream of expanding and commanding more market position. The goals of firms are, therefore, normally molded on the aspect of growth and development. It is with this desire for growth that Travel Care is venturing out into an area of specialization that it has not operated in ever since its inception. The success of its operation in this new venture would be very fundamental for the general existence of the firm. In a summary, the chances that the new venture has to succeed are pegged on the individuals that will be hired. The human resources are of immense in-put in such a scope of operation. The success or failure of the business revolves around them. The hiring department must find a way of ensuring that the firm hires only the best personalities for the job positions at hand. One of the key ways of ensuring that the company hires just the right people is through the development of an effective description of the vacancies (Thomas & Michael, 2001). The subsequent management of the hired people will also go along way in determining how well they perform. References Richard, B.(2003).
