Mismanagement of interpersonal interactions This assignment will critically analyse the problem faced when a manager lands in problems after mismanagement of interpersonal relations. A human resource manager lands in trouble after the administration realizes that they have been using sexual favours to hire and fire workers in the organisation.The manager who has a very poor interpersonal relationship with workers is not in so much worries as the management trusts in them and their interpersonal relationship is quite good. The human resource manager, James, who has been the longest serving employee of Jean and Associates, landed himself in trouble after one of the female workers, Natalie, revealed how she had sexual relations with him to get the job she has been doing. This came as a result of conflict between James and Natalie about a promotion in the work place. After Natalie was denied the promotion, she came to realize that the new girl in the organization was the one accorded the promotion after having had sexual relations with James the Human Resource Manager. James threatened to fire her if she went clean to the organizations board. Nevertheless, Natalie goes ahead and makes the confession and four other female colleague workers made the same confession. This way there is clarity that James in this case had mismanaged his interpersonal relations in the organisation (Gladwell, 2005). The problem is large to the workers because James and the management board have quite a good and tight relationship. Problem analysis The problem is going to be analysed in different concepts of interpersonal relations in communication. Interpersonal communication is the face to face communication is the most regularly used form of communication globally in their places of work, at home in the streets and merely everywhere. Many people in high places, power and authority take advantage of their position and exploit the people below them. In our situation here James who is the Human Resource manager being the one in power and the one who comes into face to face with new people looking for job, he ask for favours from the to offer them jobs .In these case sexual favours. (Alfonso & Trigilio, 1997). Interpersonal communication enhances interpersonal relation; which is the relationship or an association between people who have a connection and mostly communicate to each other face to face. James’ relationship with the workers was not the best due to his actions of sexual harassment. Furthermore, he held the power of hiring and firing workers, as a result many female workers kept quiet about what was going on to preserve their jobs. Interpersonal relationships are behavior that human being show to one another. James mismanaged his interpersonal relation with the workers and hence their communication was not at a good level as it should be in between workers. In communication, Interpersonal relations are found everywhere in the world and they play a major role in enhancing communication between people in any organisation (Kathleen, 1987). As a matter of fact, Interpersonal communication and relation have to be two way and they have to be effective and clear on both ends. Incase a misunderstanding occurs, problems in the organization arise like in the case of James the Human Resource Manager of Jean and Associates Another concept to base this problem of James misusing the female workers is that interpersonal relations helps one grow, learn, experience, improve, relate belong and many more values. On the contrary most female workers did not experience it, as they felt they were being mistreated or being misused (DeVito, 2009). James however has been using his positions to meet his needs. Interpersonal relation has to be two way. Both parties involved should feel satisfied and no one should fell left out or misused. Most of the female workers took a James as an immoral leader. They however did not have a choice, they had to oblige to him if they needed the job. Despite the organization rules, regulations and laws being very clearly laid out, James turned a blind eye to them; this portrays sign of poor leadership qualities as a result of lack of good relationship with the workers, mostly female workers (John, 2003). However, despite James having a very poor interpersonal relation with the workers, they had a very good interpersonal relationship with every member of the management and the board. Every member of the board loved and respected him. As a result, many allegations made to him by workers were not tale seriously and most were termed as null and void. He had created a healthy relationship between him and management .As a result, he was able to manipulate and control the organisation and communication is about control and taking charge. The reason as to why he was so inhuman to the workers was not known (Daniel, 2006). If the problem is not resolved, factors that will make the problem continue as long as James is the Human Resource Manager will include. Like mentioned above, James knows how to manipulate the whole organisation to his favour. The workers hate him while the management loves him. Another factor that affects the interpersonal relationship is expression. If the workers have no rights of expression then the problem will continue. Due to this, most of the workers would not risk loosing their jobs. As a result, their freedom of expressing their views and feelings about James to management is denied. Natalie and the other female counterpart will have to drop the charges or lose their job. There are two key areas of interpersonal communication that can be managed. To start with, self is the first area to be managed by any manager. This involves personal perception, which defines the perception we hold for other people. Another area in self is the self presentation, which is the impression created to other people about us. The other key area is identifying the stages involved in the relationship created by us to other people. In our problem of James and sexual harassment issue; he has mismanaged the two areas of interpersonal relationship. He has put a negative perception about himself as viewed by other people. He has been unable to keep his relationship with workers as professional as it should be and hence he has been unable to maintain the interpersonal relationship with the workers. Factor that determine the perception we have for other people and ourselves too include, authority, comfort, growth, learning and many more (Maarten, 2008) The problem was instigated by the high levels of unemployment and hence when an opportunity comes many don not want to waste. Some of the job seekers who have been going to seek foe job at Jean and Associates don’t mind the offer, however, not all are wiling to take the offer but circumstances force them to. The situation however becomes complicated when many female workers came to learn of what James had been doing. To make the problem even worse, it became a trend that if one wanted a favour, he had to ‘repay’ James to obtain he wanted. As a result, even interpersonal relationship between the workers their selves became worse on learning what was happening between them, this problem has had many consequences; most of them being negative about James and the organisation. As a result of his mismanagement of interpersonal relations, many have lost their job in the organisation while others go through mental torture every time they are in his company. The organizations name has been tarnished and this has led to loss of customers and clients. As a result, there has been low productivity in the organization and thus getting fewer profits (Baumeister & Bushman, 2008). Recommendations In every problem, recommendations must be made. In this analysis, the following recommendations would help in resolving the problem. To start with, this is a very critical problem to deal with. Since there are no witnesses available, it would b very hard to crack this case. The best thing I would recommend is by all the workers who have had a rough experience with the Human resource Manager forget and move on. This will enhance a good relationship to growth while they understand each other. Moreover, it would create a sense of belonging and it will help them reconnect with their past mistakes. As far as the management trusts James a lot, they should conduct investigation to come to the root of the matter and this will help the workers have rights of expression as it is in any interpersonal relationship. Over trusting in people make them become irresponsible and lead to mismanagement of the organization (Mark & John, 2002). The management and the board should look into the matter so that incase of any cases of sexual harassment, James should be charger in a court of law. Incase he found guilty, there should be no reason for having him in the organisation, he should be fired and another Human Resource Manager should be hired who would create a good interpersonal relation with the workers Another recommendation I would make gender discrimination in the organisation. This will enhance peaceful co-existence between people from both genders. Managing staff in organisations should use their interpersonal skills to know how to deal with workers and how to communicate to them effectively without showing signs of favouritism (Maruping, et al (2004). This will enable the staff and the managing staffs have a good relationship which will eventually benefit them in terms of the organizations’ productivity. Organisations rely totally on communication whether written or oral. If the information is altered with, the whole organisation suffers at the end (Daniel, 2006). Mismanagement of interpersonal relation improves the organisations’ output. The management seems to be doing practicing selective hearing. When workers air their problem, they just listen to them but they don’t help them. Incase a managerial member has a compliant; it is handled very fast and effectively. Avoiding selective listening is also an important recommendation I would put across (Barnett, 2008). People in relationships should not be selective on what they want to hear. At times human beings always want the negative stories before getting the positive ones. It is therefore necessary for people in interpersonal relationships to be good listeners and receivers of message to enhance communication. Some Individuals suffer from communication apprehension, which is shyness, stage fright or unwillingness to communicate. These kinds of people mostly have a lot of problem because they cannot air their grievances. Such kind of employers should look for ways to end their shyness and the unwillingness to converse. They can do that by striking conversation with people they hang around with reading more books, magazines and also participating in small group discussion (Argyle, 1992). By this they will gain courage, self esteem, self image, self awareness and self confidence to stand even before people and address them effectively and therefore they will not be victims of mismanaged interpersonal relation problems like the female workers of Jean and Associates. Finally, I would recommend to the female workers that they should go to the court of law and file their report of sexual harassment in work place. Someone using you to benefit their selves just because they have power over you should be leaders at all. Women have a right to be employed same as men and people should not ask for favours to offer you a job. Many managers nowadays have adapted this immoral behaviour to use sexual favour to offer even professionally qualified people jobs. Women are not the only victims but men too swim in the same boat. The only problem is that many men do not confess to such a thing. From the six stage model of relationship, the relationship between James and the workers is at the repair stage. It has deteriorated to the maximum and it needs repair only. No relationship exists between James and the other female workers and it needs to be worked on otherwise it will lead to downfall of the company (Sarah & Arthur, 2000). Conclusion Mismanagement of interpersonal relation has become a big issue in the society today, everyone with power exploiting the powerless due to lack of interpersonal relations. James lacks a good interpersonal relationship with the workers and he uses that opportunity to exploit them.
