Masi Tupungato Project Introduction Masi Tupungato is a winemaking project of Masi which is planned to be implemented in the Mendoza region which is one of the leading regions of producing wines in Argentina. In relation to the highly competitive global wine market, it has been recognised that Masi is one of the well-known winemaking family-owned company within the Venetian region in terms of exportation of grapes as well as winemaking. The company has been identified to be a major and leading wine and vineyard manufacturer too, within the worldwide periphery (MASI Agricola, 2012). The winery areas in the Masi Tupungato can be recognized as a sophisticated site which enables the company to successfully conduct its viticulture (MASI Agricola, 2012). Therefore, in order to accomplish a greater response and achieve better control of the overall project, it is highly important for the company to maintain a well structured program to ensure the success of its Masi Tupungato project. Moreover, it is also a major consideration for the company to put up an effective and efficient project team which can enable the firm to accomplish different processes imbibed in the project. Emphasising upon the various importance and efficiencies of project management initiatives, the major purpose of this report is to demonstrate the significance of organisational structure and the project team which would facilitate the successful completion of the Masi Tupungato project. Moreover, the discussion of this paper would also focus on highlighting the major aspects concerning the potential risks as well as opportunities which could be witnessed by the company to achieve the desired objectives when implementing the project plan. In addition, setting and reviewing criteria of the processes performed in the project will also be included in this report which would determine the success drivers and the risks of failure of the overall project. Finally, the report would also represent appropriate and justifiable recommendations concerning the efficiency as well as the effectiveness of the project. Organisational Structure and the Project Team In relation to the increasing pace of the global business environment, it is highly essential for an organisation to develop a well-built structure to effectively operate its various practices. An appropriate structure of an organisation is one of the vital factors to attain substantial benefits as the aspect provides effective coordination between the organisational processes and enables it to accomplish the determined goals (Massa & Zhang, 2010). With relation to the management process concerning the Masi Tupungato project, building effective project team can be identified as one of the major and initial decisions which can facilitate the accomplishment of each phase of the project implementation plan in a more efficient way in terms of cost efficiency, time effectiveness and quality assurance. Notably, as the company intends to manufacture wine following the native procedure in the Venetian regions, its organisational structure and project team should involve professionals who are highly skilled and aware of the rudiments of such winemaking culture. With this concern, the organisational structure of the project shall involve authoritative bodies from Masi who would be responsible to direct the entire process of wine manufacturing and warehousing for the export functions. This particular group of professionals will also be responsible to direct the skilled and trained personnel in the Tupungato region. Additionally, the required numbers of staff and labourers will be hired from the Tupungato valley and the surrounding areas which shall facilitate the project sustainability and competitiveness within the targeted region. According to the present organisational structure of Masi, it has been frequently observed that the company incorporates a large number of skilled workers so as to gain better competitiveness in completing different activities performed within the firm. Contextually, the skilled manpower can be further utilised to train the lower skilled labour forces recruited from the Tupungato Valley and the nearby Argentinean areas including the productive labourers in ‘La Arboleda’. Therefore, the skilled and highly motivated workers can be regarded as the major strength of the company which shall enable Masi to effectively perform its wide range of activities including viticulture, winemaking along with exportation of grapes into the global markets with greater efficiency (MASI Agricola, 2012). The organisational structure and project team construction can be observed comprehensively as proposed for the Masi Tupungato project. Assessing and Managing Risks and Opportunities Assessing and managing risks and opportunities is one of the major decisions for the organisations, especially in terms of minimising different challenges and obtaining substantial opportunities (White & Fortune 2002). With regard to the Masi Tupungato project, high dependency on climatic conditions can be observed which can further be identified as a major risk factor related to the planning. It is also worth mentioning in this regard that the company has planned to initiate its project with the purchase of an already established estate, i.e. ‘La Arboleda’. It is in this context that the company should pay due attention towards identifying the limitations of the estate in terms of wine production which can raise certain probable risks of lower production capacity of the soil, legal obligations and conflicts faced by the estate which might have affected its goodwill by a certain extent. It is also worth mentioning in this regard that as the project is intended to operate with the vision to involve Argentinean culture and Venetian culture, the project might also have to threats related to social conflicts and working culture hazards. In order to mitigate such risk factors, the company should focus on developing rigid norms to avoid any socio-cultural conflicts in terms of antidiscrimination policies, reward policies and compensation systems. The process would also facilitate Masi to rate possible threats and their impacts which in turn will help the project team and the managers on the whole to effectively address the other minor risk factors associated with the process. However, in accordance with the Masi Tupungato project, the aforementioned risks and counter activities may involve different difficulties which shall further have an impact on the overall functions of the project such as lack of coordination, complexities and informational communication gaps. Nevertheless, the sophisticated environment as well as adequate availability of the vineyard lands to Masi can be attributed as one of the major opportunities for the company in order to produce a large quantity of quality assured exceptional wines. Masi also inculcates the strength of skilled labour force which shall prove to be a major opportunity and advantages in the completion of the project. Setting and Reviewing Criteria for Success and Failure of the Project In relation to Masi Tupungato, it is suggestible that the company focuses on practicing continuous reviewing of its various activities, materials, machineries as well as capabilities of the workers which can further act as a major success factor for the project. The managers and the other project team participants should also be made aware of the vision and intentions behind implementing the project which shall further instil shared values among the team to effectively obtain a better control of the overall manufacturing, warehousing, marketing as well as selling activities (Frese & Sauter 2003). To successfully accomplish the overall objectives of Masi Tupungato, the company should highly focus on professional engagement, which can enable to obtain adequate information to efficiently accomplish objective of each project activity. Moreover, adequate support from its executives would also help Masi to accomplish the project activities in a more efficient manner concerning cost, time as well as quality. In addition, an adequate and apparent declaration concerning project requirements within the project managers and project supervisors would also provide significant advantage to the company in order to successfully achieve its desired objectives in the Argentinean wine market through facilitated commitment from them. On the contrary, legal obligations, high degree of dependency on climatic conditions can raise certain difficulties for the company in completing the project successfully. For instance, the management of the temperature in the vineyard, continuous maintenance of the soil fertility and assessment of the grape quality in the Tupungato region shall give rise to huge costs for the company. It is in this context that the company intends to produce Argentinean grape variety in Tupungato valley owing to which better maintenance of these conditions will be required to mitigate the risk of poor quality production and degrading customer satisfaction. Cultural, Communication and Custom Issues and their Possible Impacts Culture and communication are the fundamental aspects that play a considerable role in terms of developing and enhancing the organisational capability (Cummings & Worley 2009). It is in this context that Masi’s presence in the Tupungato valley, the organisation might have to face significant challenges concerning culture, communication and custom or traditional virtues. It is worth mentioning in this context that as winemaking has been an integral part of the Italian culture and each and every region follows a unique tradition of grape cultivating as well as wine manufacturing, these factors can be identified as the most commonly affecting factors in winemaking and exporting projects (Italy and Argentina). Cultural Issues Cultural differences are often regarded as the most affecting factors that can impose severe impacts on the organisations’ overall business operations. The issue concerning culture in the Masi Tupungato can be identified as a common factor owing to which the company can face significant challenges. The organisational culture incorporates different levels of consistent values and beliefs concerning behavioural aspects of the employees towards other members within the organisation. Moreover, the societal and national culture of the employees may possess the most influential effects from the cultural dimensions which can also be a major barrier for the project to adopt required changes within its overall processes (Dobriansky 2005). In this context, in accordance with the Hofstede’s cultural study, it has been identified that the Argentineans significantly possess low amount of individuality and masculinity as compared to the Italian workers which could affect on the organisation’s winemaking and viticulture activities through the Masi Tupungato project. Notably, the organisational structure has been built on the notion that higher amount of individuality and masculinity significantly determines to enhance the performance of the employees which is an important element for any organisation to attain its long-term sustainability which might prove to cause conflicts in the project management process at the ultimate stage (The Hofstede Centre, n.d.). Communication Issues Communication issues can also be considered as a major affecting element for the organisations in terms of conducting business operations in the other countries. The communication differences between the project managers with their subordinates and other workers can severely impact the overall project management process of the organisation concerning the involvement of Masi’s employees and La Arboleda’s as well as Venetian employees. The communication skill of the project manager can be regarded as one of the major tools to mitigate communication issues within the workforce concerning their respective roles and activities. Moreover, the communication skills of the project managers would also ensure to convey and acknowledge values, skills and contribution of the workers which further will facilitate Masi to achieve competitive advantages through the project (Dobriansky 2005). Custom Issues The custom or traditional practices of the workers can also be identified as major considerations for the organisations for the successful attainment of its long-term goals and objectives. The factor significantly constitutes traditional attitude and behaviour of the employees which can generate different issues within the working environment, especially when operating on a regionally diverse project. Influenced by such disruptions, organisations have often been observed to face various conflicting issues in relation to its human resource management practices which further affect the overall organisational progress by a large extent. In relation to the business performance of Masi Tupungato, it can be identified that the project activities would be affected by the different attitude and behavioural aspects of the Argentinean employees (Cummings & Worley 2009). Conclusion It has been identified from the discussion, that the winemaking project of Masi would be an effective strategy for the company to build its long-term sustainability in the Italian market. In relation to the present business strategies, it can be observed that Masi has been highly focused on structuring its business process in order to attain a competitive position in winemaking and exporting. Moreover, the organisations seek to perform greater initiatives in order to effectively control and manage their business processes which may facilitate them to be more competitive in the targeted market. It is worth mentioning in this context that the project management strategy of Masi should be considerably focused on increasing its winemaking and viticulture operations with due significant towards influencing factors such as climatic conditions, cultural divergences and labour force requirements. Contextually, an effective organisational structure would facilitate the organisation to successfully control and manage its different business activities in the Argentinean market. Moreover, the integration of effective risk assessment tool would also facilitate the company to mitigate different potential risks which may hinder the overall functions of the project. Furthermore, the organisation should also need to focus on its reviewing processes which would provide effective support to successfully accomplish its desired business objectives in the Argentinean winemaking market.
