The workplace that will be applied will be a teaching environment amongst young adults with exceptional needs. Working in this environment proves challenging for any individual. Sometimes, ethical dilemmas may result and if not handled according to the concepts outlined in the book, progress will be difficult to be achieved. Critical analysis According to Nelson & Quick, there are various fundamental concepts that require the application of interpersonal processes and behavior at a professional workplace environment (2010).
These concepts are Work Teams and Groups, Decision Making by Individuals and Groups, Power and Political Behavior, Leadership and Followership and lastly Conflict and Negotiation.. Teaching young adults with specific needs is a monumental challenge that may lead to ethical dilemmas. The above-mentioned concepts are discussed in the context of this environment Work Teams and Groups Groups and teams have to accomplish tasks together. The accomplishments of a group are strongly influenced by interpersonal relationships.
In a setting of young people who have unique needs, interpersonal relationships are hard to nature. Because of the difference in these groups, most students will work as individuals. It is thus vital that as a teacher, one have to encourage and build these positive interpersonal relationships. . Learning how to handle conflict and how to agree on a solution that will not show bias against any party tangled. These are some of the ethical conflicts that have to be carefully resolved through decision making, in the context of students with unique needs.
Decision making between two parties, where the teacher is the one who has to resolve the issues has to be free from personal biases. This will help create a positive atmosphere for the student’s growth and acceptance of the teacher as a leader (Nelson & Quick, 2010). Power and Political Behavior Young people with special needs suffer from some degree of social rejection. This sometimes makes them to have certain views that may seem unwanted. Power and politics are common at any workplace. Interpersonal relationships will always determine how politics and power have to be handled.
In an institution like this, there is always a hierarchy of control and power even amongst the young people. When choosing the young people who are to be in charge of certain responsibility, key concepts that will ensure the chosen students are accepted have to come in play. For example putting one student in charge, may lead to rejection by the others. These may seem as bias. Hence when playing power games, it is reasonable to communicate with the students effectively before making political decisions.
In addition to this, it is indispensable to make sure that the students understand their political rights so that when they go back to the society, they will not be undermined when it comes to their political rights (Nelson & Quick, 2010).
