Jewett’s depiction of men cannot be described as callous, but she does not hold back from displaying their social ineptitude. The men in town, displaced by the advent of modernization, spend most of their time reminiscing about the past because they miss their active seafaring lives, and have nothing to move on to and because they are old.

The simple definition of metaphor states that it is a figure of speech, generally a phrase that is used to describe the meaning of a more real but unrelated word. In other words, metaphors can compare unrelated subjects without using comparative terms ‘like’ or ‘as’. Desdemona continues to be treated as property by her husband Othello, who makes the decision whether she will go to Cyprus, and when and with whom, without even consulting her. When viewed in conjunction with the sexual categorization and demands for obedience, this patriarchy seals the fate of women to that of slaves.
The boys in the story were once young men dreaming of adventure and perhaps even glory as they risked their lives to save those of their fellow soldiers, but now they are simply trying to survive from one moment to the next, trying and failing to forget the weight of their burden as they attempt to redefine themselves based on their new knowledge not only of themselves.
The mother and family work unbelievable hard for their children; the older children basically have to raise the younger ones because there is no one around. One of the most striking characters in the story “Sweet Potato Pie,” is Charley, the oldest brother of the narrator.

In the play, Lady Macbeth is portrayed as an ambitious woman, a woman desperate to gain power through her husband, desperate enough to resort to the evil deed of murder. The plunge into evil itself strips her of her feminine qualities and pushes her into the world of violence and aggressiveness that was the province of the males during the Elizabethan era.
The relationship between the two is described in very natural, sensual language: “Gerald glanced at him, and saw him, his suave, golden colored body with the black hair growing fine and freely, like tendrils, and his limbs like smooth plant-stems” (137). He was so healthy and well-made, why did he make one ashamed, why did he feel repelled?
