The poet proclaims his love for the shepherd by saying, “If all the world and love were young.” She compares that when living things are alive, they still die (lines 15-16) and wishes youth would last forever without ever growing old. The poet uses imagery to show his wish for their love to live forever (Bloy 15).

As with so many forms of literature, the works of Gerard Manley Hopkins cannot fully be understood by merely a cursory review of his poetry. As with many of the most effective forms, the intent, meaning, and direction are oftentimes only able to be understood through a deeper and closer examination of the meanings that necessarily exist behind the overt meaning.

The poem therefore reveals a change in terms of its content and its style as far as time periods are concerned. This can also be seen in the rhyme and metre that the poet follows throughout the poem. The woman tried to tend to him as she normally would but his condition was irreversible. It was obvious that the man was worn out.
