Since she was a young girl, she seemed excellent, affectionate, obedient, and truthful; his father never imagined her becoming disobedient even a minute. Then comes the suitor, Morris Townsend, who was very handsome, friendly, and talkative. In her twenties and her thirty-thousand dollars income, her father felt that the suitor was just, but a fortune hunter and the daughter were making a wrong choice. Dr. Sloper refuses to give consent to the marriage of her daughter to Townsend. Dr. Sloper being a scientist only sees life through his eyes of reason.
