DD Month YYYY LITERARY ANALYSIS The paper discusses the literary analysis of two works written by GeorgeSaunders. The two stories in the book under discussion include the Pastoralia and Winky. Reading the two stories helps one gain that glimpse and feeling into an antic, frightening, and a shifted alternative world. After reading the two pieces of work by George Saunders, I realized that there are a lot of human sorrows that has been showcased in his work. In the case of Pastoralia, the characters discussed in the paper are pathetic, caught in existences that are soul sucking, with dysfunctional relationships and with demeaning jobs. What really elevates the stories of Saunders is his key concern on dry wit and details. The story that opens the collection, the author peeks on the world scenario of the caveman impersonator. The author overlays the corporate bureaucracy world and the buzzword double speak to the edutainment scenario. The actors are portrayed as the prisoners this is because they are employees (Lustig and Peacock, 125). Pastoralia, is a story of how the corporate power uses some of his dehumanizing tactics in exploiting the workers. The narrator receives communications that are described as horrific and hilarious, each theory has a contortion of the logic serving to strip the self-worth and the rights of the employees. The story is more pertinent than ever. The author is the most hilarious that can make one sob uncontrollably. There are various sections in the book that leaves the readers deflated and sad. Saunders has set up the vagaries and the gried of the world, but has failed to provide the reader with the instrument and tool on how to deal with it. The characters of the author do not go by the occupants of the dystopias this is evidenced by various buzzing drones and majority of the enlightened struggling compared to the status quo. The author tends to offer characters who are just like us. For instance in the story of pastoralia, there is a guy who has a mind numbing job of a fake caveman. The man is faced with problems of money, sick kids, coworkers who are malicious and annoying and a firm in the company of the employee remixing. When compared to the present generation he is compared to a person who spends majority of his time stocking the shelves of Wal-Mart. This is something that is subversive about Saunders. The author is essentially telling the readers that we live in a society filled with worst case scenario. This has enabled people to believe that dystopia has to be taught to fear and fight. The author does so with humor and details that are well crafted that there is no didacticism that an individual might expect from such opinion. Saunders is not a raving Luddite, instead he has the ability flag out the absurd minutia of the present life that people take or ignore for granted. Therefore if people’s dystopia is yet to arrive, then people are perilously closer. And whether a person chooses to go for the parallels, consumed without the prejudice, the stories of Saunders are well crafted and readable (Ortwig, Erasmus and OMalley, 623). The story made me to careen through, hungry for the subsequent kilter detail and scene. After reading Pastoralia, I realized that the author is a chronicler of the present and modern life. The next tale in the book of George Saunder’s is Winky. Winky moves along similar line exploring the conflict between the set of self-satisfaction and self-protection drives against other people’s needs. Neil attends the seminar to find out how to overcome the source of his problems. According to the story, the protagonists is seen attending self-help seminar. At the self-help seminar, the speaker’s rationalizing and psychobabble persuaded him to ditch and abandon his needy sister. Just like the funny and complex managerial rhetoric that is found in Pastoralia, the motivational lingo persuades and lull both the protagonists and the reader into a trap of conventional consumerism that is in the middle of the self as the final tales of the existence. During the first pages of the story the author begins with a setting at a self-help conference followed by a demonstration and fanfare at the tape deck. In the opening scenario, the seminar is a conventional name and claim kind of a setting where Neil is offered the solutions to some of the problems that he faces in his life. He is faced with easy mantra, easy scapegoat, and various possibilities that are spread before him. According to the self-help guru; Tom Rodgers, people tends to arise from wombs as purified and unadultered bowl of warm oatmeal. People stop becoming purely distilled bran when they crap in their bowl of oatmeal. People tends to become victims of their fellow people’s crap. Tom Rodgers uses his personal illustration that his brother Gene who was handicapped from achieving their goals. Eventually, he stops helping the brother so that he could follow the dreams. Saunders introduces the people to Winky’s world. Just like Prince Myshkin and Benjy, the readers follow her focus and believes on the window outside. Some of the concerns that the author outlines include the window outside, her focus tripped up the stairs, her stance with the wallpaper, her stance on the songs for God, her trip back down the lift, her stupid self-reprimand, her remembrance of the arrival of Neil, his love for sock and tea that sits on the authors shoulders. The author is portrayed as a lovable idiot in the present sense of word as a time-less author. The author cannot register resentment of Neil-Neil, nor her expulsion from the department, nor the dismissal from the previous living situation. The author sees Gene in an affection that is mottled. Suddenly, the author dramatically brings at per through the story of prodigal son. Winky has placed Neil as the eldest brother, a damning brother, the brother that stays home and yet stands outside the house when the brother returns. And this was the intention of the author to offer a parabolic redox for the account of the bible to hand the eldest brother the card and term them as prodigals. This time the prodigal did not go anywhere. Neil doomed to envision the greatness to practice speech in their head, cannot escape the vision for himself than he can elude the love which weakens Neil, saps him out from his dream life. What makes the Pastoralia and Winky an interesting story is the mode in which it was developed to come up with two competing loci for the reader’s contempt. In the story of Winky, Tom Rodgers continues to explain how he overcame the problem of Rodgers brother on Ellen.
