Additionally, the relationship later becomes complicated when Wai-Tung marries a woman in order to conceal his secret of being gay. The gay relationship takes place for a long time until his Taiwanese parents plan to come to the U.S to plan for a legal marriage that would give him the right to make them grandparents. Mr. and Mrs. Gao have not had a tight relationship with their son due to the distance. The director has incorporated two different approaches to family relationships in the film. The other affiliation occurs when Wai-Tung decides to marry a Chinese woman who is one of his tenants to fake the circumstance and make his parents proud.
Wai-Tung does not want them to know due to their culture and the fact that his father had just recovered from a stroke. The confusion between the relationships heats up when Wei Wei becomes pregnant with Wai-Tungs child. On the contrary, the second film has a different approach in terms of family relationships. There is the presence of blood love between the four main characters. There is no gay relationship in the film, and the director has used Mr. Chus three daughters to illustrate part of the movies title based on relationships (Maslin).
They are on and off with their spouses, and one of the daughters decide to fall in love with her ex-boyfriend. The love relationships have been used to explain more about basic human desires that cannot be avoided. Moreover, family relationships seem to be tighter compared to those in ‘The Wedding Banquet. However, as they evolve, there are surprises that keep the audience anxious. There is no balance between the family relationships and those from Mr. Chus daughters. They are traditional values that are passed through generations in the family structure.
