Women suffer simply because they are women. There are several instances highlighted in this paper to demonstrate various instances of suffering.

Equally, in both, men in the societies perpetuate the suffering and servitude of the females in both texts (Diome, 2006). However, the contrast in the two texts is that, the blue present idolization of white color and the feeling that is attached to beauty while black is attached to ugliness. In this regard, women, including black women are forced to hate themselves because of the color of their skin. On the other hand, The Belly of The Atlantic does not have so much racial undertone. Instead, African men look down upon the African women.

This means that the sorrowful plight of the females is perpetuated by their fellow Africans. The Belly of the Atlantic, presents the story of Salie, a Senegalese woman who like other woman is forced to undergo humiliating experiences because of her gender and sex. It is evident from her story that she suffers because she is an African woman and believes that her predicament might have been different had she been a white woman. She says, “I do not like submission, I prefer something real” (P 24).

From that, it is clear that as a result of gender and sex, she is forced into servitude. She also feels that her sex and race have prevented her from enjoying something that she would love to enjoy.
