s type of mood disorders affecting many teenagers where they exhibit characteristics like lack of sleep, memory problems, reduced appetite and a sense of committing suicide. Holden is no different because he is so depressed and angry at the same time. This is because his brother, Allie passed on. From his explanation, “…I slept in the garbage the night he died, and I broke the goddam windows with my fist, just for the hell of it…” (Bloom & Harold, 39), he feels relieved causing such pain to him just because his brother passed on.

His anger is seen in the violent actions, which spill over to excessive use of vulgar language. Teenagers in most parts of the world use anger to express their emotions. They feel nice causing chaos, abusing people and destroying property. A good number of them get hurt from their actions. For instance, Holden broke the goddam windows with his bare arm. He brings out the nonconformity theme by choosing to be very different from his peers. Pencey Prep realizes this behavior in him, “…you do not do one damn thing the way you are supposed to…” (Bloom & Harold, 41).

His brother’s death worsens this nonconformity because he seems to enjoy being different from others. Earlier in his statement, “…you are supposed to commit suicide or do something if old Pencey didn’t win…” (Bloom & Harold, 2), shows how depressed Holden is. He dares death without baring its consequences in mind. Teenagers undergoing depression tend to think about suicide because they find it the best alternative of evading the cruelty of their situations. Without bearing any consequences in mind, they dare such a raw deal.

It is very normal to experience a change in moods. However, a frequent variation in moods indicates abnormal behavior. Holden is quick in getting moody. This is evident when he gets a sudden urge to leave the room when with Mr. Spencer. In addition, he gets to contradict himself when proposing getaway plans. He gives very crazy
