Relationships between Language and Sexuality in Lettres D'une Pruvienne and Les Faux Monnayerurs - Essay Example

 Gide portrays the difference between different men, their ambition, and how their actions impose success or failure. In other words, Gide proves that not all men all successful, and goal achievement does not depend on traditions but on an understanding of one’s inclination and following them.

In both novels, fictional sexuality perceptions differ from the real environment setting. Zilia is not a woman but a divorcee, implying that she lacks a man to support her. Graffigny uses this lady to enforce that the perceptions of women that the 18th-century community adheres to are not natural but acquire through believes. The death of his husband signifies some freedom that ladies need to explore their capabilities. Unlike other married ladies, cilia earn her living, acquires a homestead. To equalize cilia with other ladies, Graffigny allows her to marry at the end, but with her acquired tactics to survive,  Zilla continues toiling and supporting his family. Similarly, Gide promotes some sort of homosexuality in an area that can be seen as total rejection. To Gide, community traditions and believes are just but some mob thinking, that can resolve personal issues. Although Gide does not include ladies' success in the character line, he models men who follow other people’s thoughts as failures. Bernard is strong and follows his incentives while Olivier falls victim to other people’s philosophies that makes him more vulnerable.   

            To bring their fiction as close to reality as possible, Graffigny and Gide use episodes. Graffigny uses a series of letters although written by one person but expressing different situations. Zillia, who was once married, that is in the cocoon of other women in the 18th century, becomes a widow; gaining freedom to rule his destiny and later remarries but this time equipped with different skills and perspectives of her life. Graffigny uses the different subplots as a language to enlighten the reader that perception and not nature has placed the woman in a cocoon.  In a similar manner, the counterfeiters portray the author as not omniscient. The main plot interacts with Eduard’s subplots to magnify the effect of each character's action. As matter of fact, Gide wants the writer acto acknowledgehat no one can follow all character's life simultaneously, for instance when Bernard is saas-fee’, Olivier is in Corsica, both pursuing their life roles.  The aspect of creating different scenes, at the same time speaks the message that each person lives his life and thus is not guided by similar traditions as perceived. 
In a nutshell, the two works fight traditional believes and perspectives towards life.  Gender roles and sexuality are common themes portrayed.
