The difference in the views of these two sisters reflects my experience as an American immigrant. On one hand, I wish to be granted equal rights as any other American such as voting and making the difference that I could in society. On the other hand, I still do not want to lose my original identity which I always dream of going back to someday.
Therefore, the theme of identity is a critical one from this reading, indicating the challenges immigrants face to keep or adopt new identities. Furthermore, the theme of immigration is seen in this context with the author making clear the challenges that immigrants go through and their struggle to have equal rights as the natives. Finally, the theme of otherness is also used in showing how an immigrant could adopt other cultures to fit in the society where they live. Hence, this is a significant reading in understanding the challenges of being an immigrant.
