New York New York is a port and a that is located at the mouth of river Hudson, and it covers an area of 305 square miles (790 square kilometers) (Mattern 4). It is the largest and most prominent American city, and it includes Staten and Manhattan islands, small area of New York State’s mainland to the north of Manhattan, and the western region of Long Island (Mattern 5). This city encompasses a number of neighborhoods, which include Brooklyn, Staten Island, Manhattan, and Queens and Bronx Islands, with each region exhibiting its unique lifestyle.

Additionally, it is the most populous city in the United States. This is because it is the most preferred exit to the oceans and the gateway to the North American continent (Mattern 20).New York City is the most religiously varied, ethnically diverse, famously congested, commercially driven, and the most attractive city in the United States (Mattern 22). For instance, there is no any other American city that is associated with many images in the consciousness of many Americans, more than New York City.

Some of these images include the Wall Street (finance), Greenwich Village (bohemian lifestyles), Harlem (Jazz Age), Broadway (theaters), Madison Avenue (advertising industry), Fifth Avenue (shopping), Seventh Avenue (fashion), Tammy Hall (machine politics) and slums (Mattern 16). This city also harbors a number of striving immigrants, which include Jews, Irish, Italians, and Puerto Ricans. The Statue of Liberty is recognized as the symbol of New York City. However, the city’s metropolis is itself the city’s symbol.

For over the past two centuries, New York City has been known as the wealthiest and largest American City. This is because most of the goods enter the U.S. through New York port, and the constant stream of commercial activities has ensured constant growth of this city (Mattern 18). Most Americans and nations across the globe recognize New York City as a land of possibilities because it is a constantly developing city and its metropolis it too encouraging to disappoint those who wish to progress, in life.

New York City’s ancient bedrock offers a strong and immovable foundation for hundreds of current skyscrapers. In the whole world, New York City has the tallest and magnificent buildings. History shows that the progress to the building of the modern skyscrapers originated in Manhattan where architectures combined structures with steel skeletons with elevators to construct tall buildings, which could practically reach greater heights (Mattern 12). Early settlements, in this area, followed trails of Native American and animals through difficult terrain.

The present high and Broadways still follow the routes that extend northwards across the island (Mattern 12). The city’s temperature ranges between -150F and 106oF and this temperature range is significant since it does not freeze the ice at the harbor. This enables transportation and trade possible throughout the year. The changing flora and fauna, in this city, is an indication of the rapidly changing ecosystem, which is primarily influenced by urban settlement. A number of animal and plant species are still found in this city’s natural forest cover.

These include scores of bird’s species, 80 species of fish and mammals such as urban coyote and raccoon (Mattern 16). The vegetation still has considerable precipitation, but has been significantly reduced because of urban sprawling. Some of the remaining natural vegetation cover, which is protected, includes one in Brooklyn and the other in Bronx. Works CitedMattern, Joanne. New York City. Edina, Minn: ABDO Pub. Co, 2007. Print
