Rome's significant impact upon the development of the Western European World - Research Paper Example

One of the most significant contributions of the Romans to the Western Europe or Western Civilization as we call it is in terms of religion. Rome and its government eased out the pathway for the spread of Christianity and allow it to flourish throughout the Western Civilization (Nathan, 2002). Unification and ruling with only one government and one system made communication very easy for the Romans and this facilitated the Christian monks trying to spread their religion. Even the severe persecutions of the new converts were severe enough to keep the people away from Christian fate and thus, it undoubtedly became stronger every single passing day.

Acceptance of this new fate by important personalities like St. Paul also favored the reputation of Christianity and it spread to almost the whole of Europe (Nathan, 2002). The Roman system of government was based upon democracy (Mitchell, 2007). Rome was a republic with the power to govern and rule over large masses efficiently and successfully. It used a method where officials called senators were the representatives of the local people of every social class and status. Thus, democracy gained power which monarchy, especially the hereditary one, was discouraged (Mitchell, 2007).

The system also prevented the ruling power from being concentrated in one single individual and as a result, ensuring check and balance. The effects of the Roman government had an everlasting influence on the whole of Western Civilization; even today, it has its signatures left imprinted in the European system of government. The magnificent size of the Roman Empire along with the unity it possessed as mentioned earlier also allowed the spreading of new thoughts, ideas and concepts easier and quicker.

With so many different customs and cultures brought together in one empire, Rome definitely brought together
