3 poems My Papa’s Waltz (Theodore Roethke, 1908-1963) The speaker of the poem is the young boy of a drunken father. One of the concrete images that we see in the poem is of the boy’s father drinking himself silly. Although the boy does not approve of his father’s behavior, he seems to be enjoying himself. He is dismayed that his mother would attempt to interfere with the boy spending quality time with his father. It is implied that the father does not get to spend much time with his son, as his knuckle was battered and his shirt was caked with dirt.

The father is a workaholic who has never really connected with his son, but is attempting to do so now. There are no instances of alliteration in this poem, but there are plenty of rhyming words (shelf and itself, knuckle and buckle, and dirt and shirt, just to name a few). The poet displays resentment for his mother, while showing admiration for his father. The father wants his son to simply know that he is loved and cared for.2) Father’s Song (Gregory Orr, 1947)The speaker of this poem is the father of a young girl who injured herself.

There is a stark contrast between the personalities of the two people; the daughter is more adventurous and brave, while the father is more cautious and reserved. A concrete image is “a child’s blood so red.” This is an obvious statement, yet it is trying to show the pain that the father is going through by witnessing his daughter cut her mouth. It is described as the father’s heart stopping. The poem is about how the father responds to his daughter’s accident. He is overly concerned for her, while, although she felt some pain, she does not seem to be too bothered at all.

There is no alliteration in this poem, as there are very few adjectives used. Also, there are no words that rhyme. The poem does have some rhythm to it, however, because the first and last stanzas contain three lines while the middle two paragraphs contain four.3) The night I called the old man out (Garth Brooks, 1962)The speaker of the lyrics is a son who stands up and speaks out against his father. ” All of these descriptions are roundabout ways of saying that the son and his father had a standoff. The son called his father out over some matter and now his father wants to make him pay by beating him up. The son lost although the father realized what he had done. The son recognizes that he has done the exact same thing that his older brothers had done previously. There is no rhyme to this poem; however, there is an instance of alliteration when the son describes the “screen door slammin’.

” Apart from this, there are very few adjectives that are used to describe the situation.
