Response to Narrative Process One of the ways an communicates to readers is through narrative. Narrative involves presenting a recount of a past event, scenario, or an experience. For a narrative to be effective, it has to contain important elements such as sequence, chronology, flashback, figurative language, among others. This is a review of two narratives, “Coming to Black America” and “Killing Dinner.”The narrative “Coming to Black America” was non-effective. The narrative lacked some elements of an effective narrative.

It does not begin with a paragraph that catches the reader’s attention nor does it make it clear to the reader about what is expected afterwards. Although the paragraphs make sense by themselves, the move from one paragraph to another lacks cohesion. This makes the narrative lack smooth flow. Whereas the center of conflict leading to the narrative was elaborate, the setting was poorly done. The author jumps from one setting to another and the reader gets lost in the process. The narrative lacks a climax and this makes the narrative less interesting to read.

On the other hand, Killing dinner narrative was effective. The introductory part of the narrative is so captivating and catches the reader’s attention. The narrative is chronologically organized. The narrative presents a clear recount of how the author killed his first chicken. The setting is clearly outlined and easy to imagine the original setting where the event happened. This was achieved by use of rich figurative language. The narrative has clear and smooth flow from one paragraph to another.

The climax of the narrative was clearly defined and this makes the narrative interesting and captivating (Dowhan 38). Works CitedDowhan, Chris et al. Essays That Will Get You Into Business School. New York: Barrons Educational Series, 2009. Print.
