A Doll’s House (continued from the original play by Henrik Ibsen) (Stage Directions – A middle well-furnished Norwegian room. Nora is standingin the doorway. Her husband, Helmer is sitting on the sofa) Nora: I will have to leave nowHelmer: Is my little squirrel going to cry outside the house?Nora: No! It would be humiliating for my husband that her wife cries sitting outside her house where everyone can see. I’ll cry somewhere quiet. Helmer: Then, come to papa, I’ll hug you and my little squirrel can cry herself to sleep.

Nora: I can fix you some tea before I leave.Helmer: Yes! And bake some muffins too, yum! Yum!Nora: But you have to realize that this is the last time I’m cooking something for you (sobs*)Helmer: Don’t forget to bring biscuits with tea (whistles*)…..You know what!, this won’t be the last time you will cook for me because you need to make dinner too….and tomorrow’s breakfast! (Whistles*)Nora: (Brings Tea and muffins) Dear husband! Please let me go as I will cook dinner and will send it to you at home.

Helmer: Yes that sounds fine but what about breakfast? You know I like my tea fresh.Nora: (gets confused and thinks)….oh yes, I never thought of that.Helmer: See! You need me at every stage of your life. You can’t leave me as you will get out of practice of making tea. You are not very fond of tea yourself so you won’t be making any tea after all and soon you will forget how to make a cup of this drink, would you like to be the girl who forgot the method of making tea? Nora: (Dumbstruck) well!

My husband has a point. I need to keep practicing in the kitchen.Helmer: There you go. See! A husband’s always right! Now repeat after me, THE HUSBAND IS ALWAYS RIGHT. Nora: (Repeats), my husband, forgive me for thinking about leaving this house.Helmer: Tea is boiling, go and fetch me a hot cup of tea and I’ll think about forgiveness.Nora: (Brings tea and biscuits) Helmer: (takes a biscuit and starts nibbling) while you were in the kitchen, I was thinking, maybe you should get your wish of leaving home.

Nora: (Bewildered) but you said……Helmer: Yes I know what I said but you are my wife and I care about your feelings. But as your husband, I need you to be in the kitchen too, so I have decided a plan.Nora: (Excited) what plan?Helmer: From now on you will leave the house daily but will return after a certain time. That way you will get your wish and I will get mine.Nora: But how is that possible?Helmer: From now on, you will work and earn money and I will stay at home reading newspapers and magazines.

When you will come home, your kitchen will be waiting for you where you would improve your cooking skills, that way we both will be happy.Nora: I don’t know what to say.Helmer: Say, THE HUSBAND IS ALWAYS RIGHT! Nora: (Repeats)Helmer: Now go and make preparations for the dinner….but first I need to grant you your wish of leaving home. Leave the house and buy a nice turkey for dinner and then come back home!Nora: (Shuts the door behind her and ‘leaves’ the house to buy a turkey)Helmer: (Sings with a smug expression on his face) Works Cited "SparkNotes: A Doll’s House: Context.
