Captain John Smith's information with respect to the region has mostly come from Nathaniel Butler, who was then the governor of that region. The map provided in the book or the drawing of the Isles is the only source of information that Captain Smith had while writing about the same. Thus, even though the information provided in the publication was not first hand, it was the only source for the Company available. However, that did not make it completely reliable because Smith had not personally experienced a number of events that take place through the pages of his book, a feat that makes it hard for the readers to believe in the actuality of the incidents.

Smith is thus not describing his personal experiences however he has achieved worldwide fame for being one of the only authors to have enraptured all the information and happenings of the Virginia Company.
