The SC ruling which was issued for the first time said that the “PRC people do not have the right to seek war reparations”. News report said that the ruling is based on the Japanese position that it is a matter of policy between the two governments and not between the government and individuals. Comment: The news of denial suggests that the Japanese remains steadfast in their claim of no responsibility on the comfort women issue. The article is reliable since it is published in a prestigious newspaper, and will be used in my research. Author claimed that evidences and records about comfort women were long kept in the archives of the Foreign Ministry. The publicity caused by enslaved women caused embarrassment to Japan that led to an apology from Secretary Kato. However, the review contends that there is still a denial from the government on the matter. Comment: The review gave an insight on the details how the women were recruited into the brothels, and inspite of evidences found, the government of Japan still affirms its denial of responsibility. This a both a primary and secondary source data because a part presented a direct news quote from source of information, while the rest were records author gathered from the original information and sources. Viewed 13 September 2010 from http://bcjournal.org/2008/comfort-women/ Choi, in this paper, emphasized the call of the Korean government for an apology from the Japanese government on the offenses to women during WWII and a just compensation to them. Choi said continued refusal of the government creates a strain on diplomatic relationship of affected Asian governments. Comment: The paper is convincing in terms of evidences presented. It has detailed responses of Japanese government, the response of Korea, other governments and of international organizations that keep on pressing the matter. This is a secondary source of information as the research of Choi presented her analysis and evaluaion of the original information. The paper provided a general idea of the events from the world war II up to the present concerns of women’s rights group based on original information she gathered from researh. “Comfort Women” n.d. Website also showed how the testimony of an ex-soldier was refuted and the response of the Japanese government over the controversy. The websiste also touched on the international responses of the US government, the European, the Dutch Parliament and that of Canada. Comment: This is a complete review of the controversy and had touched all aspects of its history and the present investigations. This comes as a secondary source of information as it is a compilation of all events that transpired during the wwII up to the present claims of comfort women. He was able to picture the hate in the heart of Mama Rosa, a comfort woman, in the Philippines who at age 14 was forced into being one . Comment: The book review is evidence presented in my research as a primary source. This comes as a primary source because it refers to the contents of an autobiography of one of the comfort women, and is the closest thing to the original source. A promise of reparation was made, but not of financial assistance, the news said. Comment: The news article is a primary source of information and is classified as response of the Japanese government to the controversy. Viewed 13 September 2010 From http://www.library.american.edu/about/exhibits/comfort_women.html This website provided lengthy descriptions of comfort women’s experiences during WWII. It had also exhibited photographs to attest to the confessions of women. Among the descriptions made were how women were recruited, how they were treated, how they were infected by the sexually transmitted disease. After many years of hiding these experiences, the article said that women gathered strength to come up in the open to ask for repatriations on their plight during WWII. Comment: I have classified this website as a primary source as there are interviews with survivors, photographs to certify that their assertions are true. This article is relevant to my research as this an evidence for a conclusion.
