First, there are paradigms in chivalric romances in “Everyday Use” by Alice walker who want the same quilt with Thomas Kuhn’s discussion of paradigms because it is handmade. This they say is the family heritage and whoever keeps it wins the order of the day as the leader of the family.  Through the story, we should consider the paradigms in the same way that Kuhn considers the process of science because Alice makes expressions of her feelings about her heritage even though Kuhn advices that we should be careful that he does not believe that the process of science follows a teleological course.

It is not easy for two sisters to fight over possession of a handmade quilt therefore; both of them must have had sentimental feelings about the family heritage. The quilt means everything to Alice and she can do anything to get and keep it. A good representation of a quilt is dedication and many years of work but not a simple handmade thing that makes it special.  There is symbolism where the authors make use of an object in the story to enhance the meaning makes Alice similar to Thomas who suggests science is more of an evolutionary process with a random progress and an organized one.

This I believe is the way to view literature progress for example as a symbol of the heritage. Kuhn uses a handmade quilt where only certain people can appreciate it. The handmade quilt as a genre represents a long line of relatives fighting for the same thing. Looking at the handmade quilt closely.. Looking at the handmade quilt closely, one can be able to see many pieces of cloths sewed together and the reason behind its being special is the fact that grandmother made it by hands. Depending on beliefs, people appreciate things differently.

For Dee, she appreciates the paradigm because it is her heritage and she can never express how she feels about the same quilt in subject. She has never believed that every stitch was by hand and no machine involved. Dee believes that Maggie cannot appreciate the quilt as she does. She goes ahead to think that Maggie will only use the quilt for a number of years then turn it into a rug. This is something she hates to imagine especially to the handmade quilt. According to Dee, Maggie would probably be careless and ignorant to put the handmade quilt to its everyday use.

Apart from that, Dee feels that Maggie does not have what it takes to deserve that quilt. All the special paradigms carry love as a science with them and represent people whose absences are painful. I observed one quilt and it had pictures on it that meant believing in Jesus Christ as a savior. There were pictures of broken hearts meaning that the holder is heartbroken. Many of the quilts had blood drops and a world inside them. “RIP” was also among the quilts. All quilts represent people who were once special and after their departure, they will always be in their hearts and memories.

I believe the possible relationship between the two pieces is attachment close to fairy tales. It is not necessarily that a quilt should represent some one loved same thing with paradigms used by Kuhn, it could mean anything and anybody can keep it. For example in everyday use by Alice, Maggie and Alice, both deserve the quilt because they could be having
