Easter 1916 by William Butler Yeats - Essay Example

      In the second stanza the poet refers to a woman.This woman is Constance Markiewicz.  She was a lady who had great social importance as an army officer, politician and socialite. She fought in battles in order to bring independence to the Irish. When Pearse surrendered to the British the battle came to an end. Furthermore he was imprisoned where it was decided that she would be hanged to death. Later that punishment was change to life imprisonment where in 1917 she was set free because she was a lady.

4             Yeats had reservations with the fact that she was granted freedom because of her sex. He believed that if she was upfront during the battle then she should have not been granted freedom on the basis of her gender. Furthermore people had this strong feelings of injustice for her because she sacrificed her innocence and young life for her nation but Yeats believed that it was her call and choice to do so.       In the second portion of this stanza the poet has discussed many important people who served actively during the battle.

The first and the most important is Peare who was running a school in Ireland and was basically a poet and writer. He fought till he was executed by a firing squad. His other really close friend MacDonagh was also a teacher in the same school and was a writer/poet as well. He also lost his life while he was stationed in the same manner as Peare by being fired by a squad. Thirdly MacBride was also a close friend of Peare who served for the cause.MacBride was also a noble man but since Yeats liked his wife.. This portion of the second stanza has been influenced by his personal grudges. The third stanza of poem is written in order to discuss the dual nature of the Rising that erupted. No success is possible without struggle, effort and constant devotion and dedication. If one stands for the cause then they need to
