Rubyfruit Jungle The issue of gay and lesbianism has been in society over the last century and even years prior to that. There are very many facts that have been brought to book in an effort to make the issue more understandable to people. The manner in which these groups of people are viewed by society is one that goes far in length to demonstrate the amount of misconception present. There have been very many authors over the last couple of years that have had played a great deal in spreading the word about the presence of the gay and lesbian in society. Their works have garnered different reactions from various people ranging from positive criticism to negative attributes offered towards them. One of the most common works of literature currently banned from the local library due to opposing views is Rubyjungle. This is a text written by Rita Mae Brown and has had various reactions in society from its content. Despite this, I find it rather imperative for the maintenance of the text in the local media for various reasons. In the contemporary world, there have been various issues that have come up regarding the manner in which gay, lesbians and other none straight people are treated by society. There are locations in the world where the concept of lesbianism so much negatively appraised that reports of murder have been made regarding these people. Banning of the book in the local library is not the honorable step to take as it makes the people in society have the notion that lesbians are not legal people in society and thus the move against the book. It is rather important that the library keeps the book in check so that people can continue reading it to diversify their knowledge of the lesbian people in society and identifying them as a welcome part of society. A critical assessment of this is done from the manner in which Carrie, the mother of the young lesbian character, Molly, in Rubyfruit Jungle reacts upon knowing that her adopted daughter was not straight. She is scared due to the community virtues that people in the community uphold and even goes to such an extent as insulting her daughter due to her behavior and disowning her. The fear of redemption comes out clearly also from the fact that despite Molly being a courageous girl, she is forced to have intimate actions with her male cousin in an effort to try persuading the community of her gender. This fear is nurtured by the banning of the novel from the community library as people continue loathing the lesbian acts and the book is one that can assist reduce the vastness of the fear from education (Rosen 21). Another reason as to why the literature should return on the library bookshelf for community review is for independence and freedom. The notion of having various types of people in society is very important in that it assists in the buildup of cultural identity and the recognition of various aspects rather hidden from others. The work should get exposed to more people over the years in a bid to improve the cooperation and the sexual identity of the people around the community. When people have the book around and the library accepts its advocacy to the society. The lesbian people as portrayed in the book are free to carry out their activities without any fear of oppression. The fear of oppression and judgment is rather very demining to a community in that people do not have the opportunity to explore their deeply embedded talents. These talents are majorly in the corporate world where it gets rather difficult to follow a career. With less oppression and assured freedom from the availability of the book in the library, the greater community is bound to have a clearer understanding of the issues that the lesbian community goes through. With the assurance of an understanding community, the lesbian groups in society subsequently gain the much-needed strength to come out strongly in an effort to reveal their true selves. After the revelation, they have the ability to look for employment in the various institutions around. This is rather a very great step towards community development. As a comparison to the story, the community in which Molly lived did not understand her situation due to lack of awareness and related factors. This reason led to Molly having a rather difficult life such as even after her education, she still found it rather hard to get a decent employment in her neighborhood (Brown, 32). People feared the fact that she could portray their businesses in a negative manner thus losing clients. It is due to this that she ended up moving to New York in search for employment where she hoped to either start life afresh or hope that the people there were not as sexually discriminative as those of her home town. This point proves that community awareness through the presence of such books as Rubyfruit Jungle is important for the maintenance of a civil society with very few fears and thus the requirement of having the book in the library. Rubyfruit is a rather explicit book from the manner in which it portrays the presence of lesbianism in a manner that very few books have the legal capacity to do so. However, the fact that it has gone beyond the ranks to gain credibility and publishing rights proves that the book has quality standards that are of no harm to community but rather educational in its own sense. The educational aspect of the book is from the way that lesbians get understood as not having ability to control their sexuality but rather that some of the factors that bring it are natural. A clear revelation of this is from the manner in which Molly, the adopted daughter in the story grows up completely oblivious of her sexuality until a later point in life when she gets to the adolescent age and starts having same sex relations with other fem ales from her class. This story can help the society understand the complexity of sexuality and thus offering a much broader comprehensive capacity (Rosen 69). It is also very imperative to have the book in the local library for various other purposes. One of the other reasons is that it helps in the fast development of the society. Many of the contemporary developing countries have done so from their willingness to accept change and this has been imperative in the maintenance of steady social moves. One of the changes in society is the different types of people that have come up in identification of their sexuality. This is as opposed to the ancient days when people were outrageous upon hearing stories of people that were of different thoughts about sexuality. Change has been found rather imperative in the contemporary world. Many are the times that people take on actions that they do not have the assurance of the outcome. Many people in society are rather doubtful of these actions and hence tend to shun the activities by undermining them. When people criticize lesbians in society without an articulate view of what they can really offer, they tend to throw away much talent that can be of use to society. This trend is slowly depreciating and thus the increased amount of talent recognized in society lately (Cole 106). In comparison to our local society, having the book present in the local library is imperative because it will lead to much attention given to the lesbian group in society. There are many talents that these people bear that others in society may not have and the acceptance of this type of change is the first step towards a much more revolutionized society. In Rubyfruit Jungle, Molly, moves to a big town in search of employment where she finds it rather hard to settle at one, however, she eventually lands an employment. Had Molly’s community accepted her for her sexuality, she could have employed her talent in her native town and thus being a spear for empowerment and development in the society. Despite the fact that this could have been rather hard for the society to accept, her contribution could not have gone unnoticeable. This is the main reason as to why the advocacy of education about lesbianism and associated sexualities is important. The community gets a deeper understanding of the people, subsequently; the minority group come out and gain employability rather than sitting back and not carrying out anything developmental because this is depreciatory for a society as a whole (Daniels 159). One of the positive impacts that the aspect of lesbianism has had on society in the contemporary world is the manner through which children born and raised by such parents behave entirely. Children from this types of family are rather well disciplined and behaved and many are the times that they perform well both academically and in the career field. It is important to note that banning the book from the library will lead to a self-loath and fearful generation of people as they carry on their day-to-day activities. People are supposed to assist lesbians settle down and have their own families because this would lead to a community that is less of crime and other societal dysfunctions. With the book in the library, the number of people that come out of their sexuality is bound to increase much to the benefit of the society . This as compared to the book is from the manner in which Molly was brought up, when people read the book and identify the type of terrible mother that Molly had to survive with especially after knowing of her sexuality, they will have to identify with the importance of having same-sex parenthood especially of the female type. When women bond together in a manner that they get into a relationship, the child that they bring up is well trained from the motherly instincts that are in this case combined. The will to learn and acknowledge right or wrong also comes out rather vividly (Ward 99). Rubyfruit Jungle has received a lot of criticism from the vastness of sexuality portrayed; however, the book should be in the library from the fact that apart from the sexuality, there are other aspects of society that come through in a rather concise manner (Karls 43). Poverty is a major theme that comes up clearly in the book. The manner in which the foster mother and the amount of challenges that she had to go through in her daily life as she raised Molly through tough times brings this out clearly. There is also the theme of education clearly brought out in the book. It is important to note that not all the readers of the book will have a negative attribute to it regarding the manner in which the plot reveals itself. Some people will have the sole mission of finding out about the various attributes writers have regarding education and thus have the book as a source of insight for greater development intellectually (Dixon 89). Rubyfruit is generally a very important book to society both for development and for personal insight. The manner in which the story comes out clearly through the plot and the flow reveals this clearly because of the various themes expounded. Having the book banned from the library will have a negative impact on the community not only as a source of insight for several of the societal issues mentioned, but also for the literature of the young people around the area. Many of the young kids do not follow what is portrayed in the book but rather just read it to obtain the high level of literature presented and thus the importance of preserving it.
