“I am Alone,” a speech by Conchise, is intense. Conchise is a Chief of the Apache Nation. He writes a speech that is filled with passion, hope, promise, and pleading. His desire is not to blame the white man, but instead, he comes with a simple and humble request. This request is that he receive help, and be given land and food to care for the few people who remain part of his tribe (Tripod 3:13). Due to the past, and the many wars, his people, though strong, and once warriors, have been defeated because they could never be replaced.

There were too many white men, and not enough Indians (Tripod 2:10+11). At the end of the day, survival of the fittest resonates in Conchise’s mind; not just the fittest such as the white race, but his people; the ones who are still alive. Harmony through submission is the last resort, and the theme in this piece of literature. Women vs. Indian is an essay written by Anna Julia Cooper. This woman lived through slavery and is a feminist by nature (Clark 4). She talks about equality not just for the Women, but for the blacks, and the Indians.

Her plea is equality for all who were weak and weary (Clark 7). The essence of universal courtesy is regarding one’s neighbor as one’s self. . “Who is my neighbor?” is not only a question but it is also a theory (Clark 7). Every culture, at some point in time ponders the very cliche “who is my neighbor”. The answer to the question is in the people. Depending on race and culture, the neighbor can be literally someone living beside you, or it can be someone who shares a spiritual connection.

If you are progressive, your neighbor is everyone around you. Every culture has some fault regarding how one should be treated. People behave based on their environment, and how they were raised. Religion plays a huge role in understanding the “who is my neighbor” conundrum. Lineage possesses a direct correlation between those who feed, and those who starve. The question is not whether the food will come; the question is rather, in what manner it will be delivered. During the Women’s Movement, reform was starting to take place.

As much as blacks and women were treated unfairly, so were the Native Americans. Just like Conchise. Cooper sees change coming from the eye of the beholder. Both know that the issue cannot be approached in a negative fashion. One must humbly bow, and submit, if they want to see real change. What does submission look like? Society paints a bleak picture of submission. The Bible portrays women as being the feeble, subservient and less dominant characters. They are seen bowing their heads, washing feet, caring for the children, but posses no other qualities or rights.

They are expected to submit to authority, whether they agree with it or not. Many women didn’t know any different. There was no point to disagree, because they never were able to exercise their rights, an opinion was not a reality. This is true also
