The story impressively reflects the kind nature of the women who adopted a positive attitude towards the boy and rather giving him to the police or asking people to beat him she took the boy and treated him like her son. She asked him to wash his face and comb the hairs and for all her kindness the surprised boy didn’t have the chance to say Thank you Ma'am and they departed for ever. The women deal with the boy very kindly as if she knew him well and have trust upon him. The boy who was looking for a chance to run away from her also got inspired from the attitude of the women and tried to prove him trust worthy.
She took care of boy like mother “Um-hum! Your face is dirty. I got a great mind to wash your face for you. Ain’t you got nobody home to tell you to wash your face?” “No’m,” said the boy. “Then it will get washed this evening,” (line 42-48) The conversations between the women and the boy make the boy feel positive about life and his attitude. He listened to the advices of the woman who also shared her life experiences with him in very light manner and taught him lesson to deal with life in better way.
The woman made the boy comfortable by admitting that in her early life she also got involved in some wrong acts when she wanted to have some things that she never had. She accepted I have done things, too, which I would not tell you, son – neither tell God, if He didn’t already know. Everybody’s got something in common (line 140-144) Here the women took very realistic approach and rather portraying her adolescence phase very clean and clear he told the boy that such moments came in the life of the people very commonly however, it is up to the people that how they deal with such moments and what way they select to come out from the problem they face.
She gave him lesson to be positive rather making his own and others’ life difficult. She advised him very politely but also warned him about the extreme outcomes of the wrong deeds. She said to the boy as they were departing “Next time, do not make the mistake of latching onto my pocketbook nor nobody else’s – because shoes got by devilish ways will burn your feet” (line 187-191) The touching story portrays the character of Mrs Jones as a caring and loving mother. She took care of the boy like a mother and turned her intentions towards a positive direction.
The boy failed to snatch her purse but it was the lucky moment for him as he got even more precious and valuable things in form of woman advices that will guide him throughout his life and will work to make him better person. It was a constructive move in Roger’s life that sure had good impact upon his present and upcoming life. The character of Mrs Jones was that of a very kind lady that reminds of a mother who recognizes the need of the children before they ask. Similarly, she realized that the boy needed something to eat and also to clean his face and hairs.
She pointed out towards these things just like a mother and made Roger feel and look better. Due to her attitude Roger didn’t tried to ran away from her house even when he got chance to do so. She built confidence and trust through her behaviour rather forcing the boy to do the things. The reaction
