Specifically, the authors examined the impact of illegal immigrants to the economy of the US. The researchers conducted a qualitative research to determine the impact of illegal immigration on wages and job opportunities based on a dual labour model. Furthermore, the authors also analysed the fiscal impact of illegal immigration by studying factors such as taxes paid as well as the costs imposed on the society in terms of using social services. Why was the research performed? The main objective of performing this study was to assess the impact of illegal immigration on the economic developments in the US. Findings The study revealed that illegal immigrants made a significant contribution to the economic growth in the country. The Impact of Local Immigration Enforcement Policies on the Health of Immigrant Hispanics/Latinos in the United States. American Journal Of Public Health, 105(2), 329-337. Why was the research performed? The main objective of conducting this study was to explore the impact of local immigration enforcement policies on how people utilize health services among Latino/Hispanic immigrants in North Carolina. North Carolina has experienced an upsurge of Hispanic/Latino illegal immigrants in recent years. This has led the local authorities and the state to enforce various laws and policies that aim at regulating and controlling the illegal immigrant populations. The state policies have had varied impacts on the population, including limiting their ability to enjoy public services such as health. The authors sought to understand the impact of the immigration policies in the state on how these immigrants utilize health services. In order to achieve this objective, the authors analysed crucial health data while focusing on policy frameworks such as Immigration and Nationality Act Section 287(g) and the Secure Communities program. In addition, the researchers also conducted 17 interviews and 6 focus groups with the immigrants across the state to examine how they were affected by the policies in terms of how they utilized health services. Findings The authors found out that there were not any significant differences in terms of how the immigrants utilized prenatal care either before or after the state began enforcing the its immigration policies. However, they found that at the individual-level analysis Hispanic/Latino mothers often opted to seek their prenatal care later on. The authors also discovered that the women received inadequate care in relation to other non-Hispanic mothers. Furthermore, the research participants also reported that they did not trust the health services, hence avoiding visiting for hospitals to seek medication. One of the main methods of dealing with illegal immigration is deportation. However, deportation has a wide range of effects on the immigrants as well as their children. In this study, the researchers sought to assess the impact of deportation on the mental health of children whose parents are deported. The study was based on illegal, immigrants from Mexico into the US. Therefore, the main objective of the study was to evaluate the mental health associated with parental deportation vis-à-vis the children whose parents have not yet been deported. The researchers used Spanish version of the Child Behaviour Checklist to assess the mental health of the children in the study. Findings The study found out that children whose parents were deported suffered mentally as compared to those whose parents had not yet been deported. The children from deported parents were more likely to show externalizing and internalizing issues. Strengths The study focuses on addressing one of the most overlooked issues in immigration research. Most studies often focus on assessing the impact of immigration on adult immigrants while overlooking its impact on children. This makes the article stand out from the rest. Weaknesses One weakness of this study is that it focuses on the psychological aspect of the immigration policies in the Us in terms of how such policies affect the psychology pf children whose parents have been deported. According to Frederking (2012), some of the factors that continue to shape immigration policy in the US, especially after September 11 include institutional changes, party changes, and the media. The author endeavoured to assess how these issues have influenced the immigration polices f both Canada and America after the terrorist attack in New York in 2001. In addition, the author looks at how the events of the unfortunate terrorist attack affected how Americans deal with shock and their interactions with foreigners. The main purpose of the author was to present an comparative analysis of the immigration policies in the US and Canada after the terrorist attack in September 11, 2001. Findings The author found out that both Canada and the US altered their approach to immigration in the wake of the attacks. For instance, Canada’s immigration polices tend to focus on the concept of human rights. As such, the immigration policy in the country revolves around issues such as inclusiveness and openness. On the other hand, the US has long related its immigration policy to the security and economic challenges the country faces. Strengths The author analyses the immigration policies in the US and Canada in the best possible ways, by examining common issues as well as the differences that exist in their approach to immigration. As such, the author is able to present a perfect argument that looks on both sides of the issue. Weaknesses The article’s main weakness is that it relates Canada’s immigration policy to the terrorist attacks that happened in the US. This study was aimed at finding out the entrepreneurial spirit in ethnic immigrant communities in the UK. Immigrants have often been associated with illegal business activities in the UK and are often linked to criminal activities. The authors wanted to determine the scientific truth in any of these stereotypes that associate illegal businesses to illegal immigrants. Therefore, the researchers reached out and interviewed about thirty Nigerian immigrants and analysed he data. The study took about three months. Findings According to the study, there is some validity in linking immigrants to illegal business activities in the country. Most of the respondents confessed to having dealt in illegal businesses in London. In addition, some of the illegal immigrants could not distinguish between informal and formal entrepreneurial activities. Strengths The amount of time the researchers took in collecting and analysing the information indicates the thoroughness with which they conducted the study. As such, their findings are well presented with detailed analyses. Weaknesses The study mostly involved Nigerian immigrants to the UK. Therefore, it may not be appropriate to conclude that other immigrants from other countries also participate in illegal activities. The research should have been more specific. 6. Why was the research performed? The past few years have seen many states change their immigration strategies by implementing strict immigration policies and laws. This has raised concerns over the general trajectory and the impact of these tough laws on immigration both now ad into the future. This article Examines the impact that these tough laws can have on the immigration strategy of the states. The study was based on a survey of undocumented illegal immigrants from Mexico, who had either been deported or returned to Mexico voluntarily. Findings The researchers found out that due to the tough immigration policies the state implement, some of the undocumented immigrants reported experiencing difficulties in accessing basic services such as health, education. In addition, they also experienced difficulties in accessing legal help. Moreover, about half of them expressed fear of being deported. However, when the researchers evaluated the direct impact of punitive polices such as the E-verify policy, they could not establish any statistical evidence of the polices on immigration patterns. Nevertheless, the authors found out that since these tough polices were enacted, the undocumented immigrants have expressed fear of being discovered and some of them have voluntarily returned to their homes. Strengths This article is very informative in the sense that the authors explore the issue from many different angles. For instance, apart from conducting interviews, they also went further to assess the statistical evidence relating the laws to the immigration situation. This only helps to enforce their conclusions and make their argument stronger. Weaknesses The main weakness of the research is that it was based on individuals in Mexico, who reported to either being deported or returning home voluntarily. The article does not verify the authenticity of their claims. Furthermore, it can be very difficult to rely on the responses of this sample because there were not in the US at the time of the study.
