Summary of Chapter 15 This chapter discusses the different kinds of correctional ideology. It is comprised of punishment, treatment and prevention. The varied types of prisons include the ones with super maximum security, a special housing unit, and a separate one for dangerous prisoners from the general population. These prisons are classified in terms of being maximum where highest security level exists, are restrictive, fenced and have guard towers within them. The medium security prisons have prisoners who are deemed as less fatal, have fewer guard towers with electrified fences.

The minimum security prisons have overall low security, have generally short sentences and comprise of white collar criminals. The prison administration is taken care of by a warden, a deputy warden, an assistant deputy warden, resident unit managers and their assistants, and lastly the inspectors. The prison staff comprises of physicians, psychiatrists and psychologists, dentists, nurses, pharmacists, librarians, recreational staff, school staff and a minister. Retribution is in the form of being proclaimed as an enemy of the society who deserves harsh treatment.

Deterrence is in the form of punishment that has to be swift and visible to others. Incapacitation is being isolated from the society and it can be selective in nature. The overall effects of punishment is that there should be cleansing of the offenders and the public must not see the offender having any form of sympathy. The treatment ideology has to be more humane and kind while inmates are shown the rewards that come along with positive behaviors. The need is to reform through punishments rather than to make them hardened criminals.

Also the reintegration model looks at having the prisoner being a product of a community which has largely failed him and hence needs the facilitation of the community support.
