Probation, Parole and Incarceration Incarceration is the act of putting one into prison or another enclosure. Probation refers to the adult offenders who are placed on supervision by courts through a probation agency. Shock probation usually involves a short-term sentence in a correctional facility and then being placed on a traditional probation. Supervisions during probation can of different types including active supervision where the probationers are required to regularly report to the agency in person, mail or by telephone.

Inactive status includes where the probationers are exempted from regularly reporting and could be due to a number of reasons. During the probation period, the offenders are required to meet specific rules of conduct while in the community (Peak, 2012).Parole refers to criminal offenders who are released on condition to serve the remaining portion of their sentence in the community. Parolees can have different supervision statues including active where they are regularly required to report to a parole authority in person, mail or by telephone.

Some may be on an inactive supervision and are exempted from regular reporting due to various reasons. The parolees are required to fulfill conditions which failure to adhere to them they may be incarcerated (Peak, 2012). Incarceration, parole and probation are forms of punishment to the criminal offenders, and the type of sentence depends on the crime committed.
