Anger Management and Successfully Emotional Abuse Sexual Harassment What is Anger Management? Anger can generally be defined as being a process that is usually brought on by intense feelings towards someone or something in our lives. The term anger is generally regarded as a catchall term for any number of feelings or emotions that tend to often drive us. Thomas (60), defines anger as being an essentially strong and often uncomfortable emotional response to a specific given provocation that is perceived to be unwanted and rather incongruent with a given individual’s beliefs, values and rights. Anger management which is the effective management of anger and avoiding the often negative effects of angry emotions has been variously defined as being a cycle where physiological, emotional and cognitive triggers are carefully identified and thereafter, discussions of potential situations that might possibly engage those anger triggers are conducted with the aim of attempting to review some of methods that can effectively be used to effectively deescalate the anger (McCarthy and Hutz 100). To successfully manage my emotions and anger in the event that there happens to be emotional and stressful situations pertaining to my various relationships, I will engage in the use of various anger management and stress management techniques that will variously include: The identification of the negative thought patterns that tend to trigger my temper: While it is often common to think that external factors such as other people’s actions and frustrating situations are the sole cause of my anger, it should be noted that anger problems sometimes tend to pertain more to how a person tends to interpret and think about events as opposed to what happens to them. Some of the more common anger triggers might include. Over generalizing and wrongly assuming that everything tends to go against my plans or that everyone disrespects me. Blaming is also found to be another common anger trigger and the constant belief that someone else evidently, is at fault for things that happen to one’s person as opposed to an individual taking proper responsibility for both their life and actions has been seen to cause unnecessary anger (Peacock 24). Avoiding situations, places and people that tend to bring out my worst: While stressful events generally don’t excuse anger, carefully understanding how these events tend to affect an individual can greatly aid the concerned individual to successfully avoid aggravation and manage to control their environment. To use this strategy, individuals can examine their daily routine schedules and attempt to identify the times of day, places, people, activities or situations that often tend to cause them to experience irritable or angry feelings. Physically removing myself from negative situations: In the event that an individual happens to feel their anger quickly spiraling out of control despite efforts to try and control it, one can opt to try and physically remove one’s self from the situation for a number of minutes or even for as long as is required for the individual to cool down. Engaging in alternative activities such as going to the gym, taking a brisk walk or even listening to some soothing music has been shown to aid individuals in calming down and effectively releasing their pent-up emotions. This allows them to approach the situation anew with a much cooler head. How I Plan on Avoiding Harassment in the Future Harassment is a crime that can potentially have some severe and long lasting effects on the targeted victim as it tends to erode any feelings of safety, comfort and privacy. Harassment can take any of several forms ranging from the sending of unwanted or threatening letters and emails, stalking, making unwanted phone calls or even the sending of unwanted gifts. The severity of harassment can range from a mild harassment that essentially causes a mild annoyance on the part of the victim to chronic harassment that can at times escalate in attempts by the harasser to try and injure or kill the victim. It is critically important for all individuals to ensure that they try and take measures designed to stop harassment and effectively shield themselves from it. Stopping all contact: One of the measures that can be taken to avoid harassment is the victim undertaking to stop of all contact with the harasser. Maintaining contact with the harasser can at times be wrongly perceived to be a form of reward for the harassers efforts. Actions taken by the victim that cause them to come into contact with the harasser such as the victim simply trying to tell the harasser to stop the harassment or an angry outburst directed at the harasser can often increase the duration of the harassment. All communication with the harasser should be stopped and in the event that it continues to become increasingly severe, the victim can consider moving or even changing jobs (Mu?ller 140). Enlisting the aid of friends and family: Trusted friends and family can be able to provide an essential network of support and help for a harassment victim and it is advisable that a harassment victim tries to enlist this aid. One should always inform the trusted friends and family of what exactly has or is currently happening so that they will be well informed and avoid taking any calls form the harasser or even unwittingly aiding the harasser by providing important information. These trusted friends and family should also be encouraged to visit the victim more frequently to aid in discouraging the harasser from attempting to visit the victim. Not posting any personal or sensitive information online: To further avoid harassing behavior in the future, one can undertake to avoid posting any personal information such as one’s own address, phone number or location on the various forums and websites found online. One should always use available security features such as locking one’s profile so that only friends will be allowed to view the profile information and ensuring that they never try to invite anyone that they might not happen to know personally as a friend on any online community site. Use of a restraining order: In the event that all efforts geared at trying to prevent harassing behavior happen to fail, victims can be able to try and obtain a restraining order so as to effectively protect themselves from the harassing behavior. Restraining order are useful in the event that stalking or harassment is seen to continue unabated and the victim happens to have evidence of the harassment. This record can be presented to the local police department for investigation and once the restraining order is successfully issued, it will allow the various law enforcement officers to be able to arrest and charge the given perpetrator (Kerr 54). What I have learnt about Sexual Harassment and how I will be able to use this Information to Successfully avoid behaving in a Manner that could be taken as being Sexual Harassment Sexual harassment can have a variety of negative effects on the victim being harassed and the perpetrator of the harassment whose effects might potentially end up affecting the workplace or society. The effects of sexual harassment are seen to greatly vary between individuals in addition to their also being seen to be contingent on the duration and severity of the harassment. Of note is that sexual harassment is essentially a type of harassment and the victims of chronic or severe sexual harassment can potentially suffer from psychological effects that are seen to be similar to those suffered by rape victims. Depending on the given situation, victims sexual harassment can potentially experience effects that are seen to range from mild annoyance to extreme psychological damage. It should also be noted that that the impact of this harassment on the victim’s chosen career and life can either be quite minimal or sadly end up leaving them in complete ruins while the harasser is sometimes seen to emerge from the situation being relatively untarnished (shrier 190). Sexual harassment has wildly been linked to a general decrease in job satisfaction and can cause a business enterprise to potentially loose expertise or staff members as a result of resignations aimed at avoiding harassment. Team conflicts can also increase and affect job performance in environments where harassment is seen to be occurring. To avoid behaving in a manner that could be interpreted as being harassive one can take some steps such as: Pay attention others: to avoid any unintentional harassment, it is important for one to pay attention to other people’s responses and to not simply assume that co-workers and employees what or even enjoy hearing sexually oriented comments or risque jokes pertaining to their appearance or event to be stared at, touched, flirted with or be propositioned for sexual favors or dates. One should always examine their comments, behaviors and gestures and critically analyze if they might be unknowingly encouraging any form of sexual interplay by the manner in which they communicate of interact. Understanding the sexual harassment policy: Understanding the organization’s or institution’s sexual harassment policy is a key factor in preventing an individual from acting in a manner that can be assumed to be harassing. A sexual harassment policy essentially points out to all the various workplace participants that sexual harassment is a vice that is considered to be unacceptable in the workplace. The policy provides guidelines that show exactly what is considered to be sexual harassment within the organization or institution and carefully understanding the policy can aid one in avoiding unintentionally harassing someone (Bruess and Schroeder 162). Attending seminars: To avoid actions that can be misinterpreted as being sexually harassing, one can also attend any seminars on sexual harassment provided by various organizations to help in sensitizing the community and organizations on sexual harassment.
